The rescue of the three follows an extensive air and ground search in rugged country near the Maningrida Road, where their vehicle became stuck at a remote creek crossing. Those found today included a mother and her three-year-old daughter who went missing in the bush, without any provisions, after attempting to walk about 50km to Gunbalanya from the stranded Nissan Navara. The mother and daughter were conveyed from the rescue site to the Gunbalanya Health Clinic for treatment following their ordeal. Police said today search teams had been forced to look for two separate groups from the same vehicle. The drama began when a Nissan Navara carrying five people became bogged at Cooper’s Creek on the Maningrida Road while heading west towards Gunbalanya. While the family group was attempting to walk to Gunbalyana the mother and daughter complained of feeling unwell, so the man left them in the bush and went for help. As with the newest rivals, the Navara has addressed its biggest customer concerns, payload and towing capacity. The new Navara can tow 3500kg — the same as the class leaders and, by no coincidence, the maximum legally allowed for such vehicles. The new four-door Navara has a payload of 1112kg in bare-bones rear-wheel-drive diesel spec (with the lesser version of the two diesels available) or 930kg if you buy the top-of-the-range 4WD with all the fruit, both figures on par for the segment. The crew cab’s rear window slides open at the press of a button so you can yell at someone (or be yelled at) when reversing or let the mutt poke his head inside. That means the proportions are almost the same as the outgoing Navara (even though every panel is new) and there’s not much extra cabin room. There is no digital speed display, only one USB port to charge gadgets (more please, Nissan), the steering wheel has no reach adjustment and only the driver gets an auto-up window. The segment once the domain of tradesmen is now increasingly fodder for families and weekend warriors, demographics that Nissan Australia has gone to extreme lengths to appease with its fourth-generation Navara launched this month. Twelve months ago local stakeholders snuck a pre-production Navara into the country and unleashed it among focus groups of men and women concerned equally with its styling and aesthetics as its uprated 3. 5-tonne towing capacity. Sitting pretty on the red dirt of the South Australian outback with LED daytime running lights and turn indicator signals and 18-inch alloy wheels, the flagship ST-X Navara is a polished departure from traditional dual cab utes. The friendly interior is accompanied by some hefty underbody revisions including an updated box ladder chassis with a new front suspension setup allied with a coil-sprung, multilink rear. The updated architecture feels more compliant across all surfaces, relaying imperfections firmly but without any of the bounciness that blights most leaf sprung dual cab products.
