Collectible Classic: 1994-1996 Chevrolet Impala SS - Automobile

The Impala SS wouldn’t outrun a modern Honda Accord V-6 , and Leahy is more interested in catching up with friends along Woodward than laying rubber at every stoplight. Yet in its heyday, the SS was a bonafide muscle car, and thanks to its subdued looks and four-door body, it didn’t attract as much attention as its performance merited. After a hiatus of 25 years, the Chevrolet Impala SS returned for the 1994 model year with all the hop-up parts needed to justify its final two letters. Based on a Chevy Caprice sedan, the SS had a beefed-up LT1 V-8. a lower, heavy-duty suspension derived from the Caprice cop car. To help passersby tell the Impala SS apart from plebian Caprices, it wore special five-spoke aluminum wheels and a rear spoiler and all its exterior chrome trim was deleted. The majority of the cars were painted black, which was the only choice in 1994 until dark cherry metallic and dark gray joined the palette for ’95 and ’96. With more than five million examples sold since its inception in 2001, the Jazz is one of Honda’s most important cars, so the Japanese manufacturer could be forgiven for feeling the pressure when it came to building the third-generation model. Unsurprisingly, Honda’s engineers have stuck to the tried and tested formula of offering bags of practicality in a small, easy-to-park package. That, however, puts it straight in the firing line of the new, improved Skoda Fabia , one of the go-to cars for those who decide against the Ford Fiesta and the VW Polo. The practicality story Honda set out to make this the most spacious car in its segment and a boot almost 25 litres larger than that of the Fabia (the most capacious rival) suggests immediately that the company has been successful. That’s only a small fragment of the whole practicality story though, because when you fold the back seats down, the Jazz’s boot expands to 1,314 litres – 164 litres more than the Fabia in the same configuration. An extra 65mm in knee clearance may not sound like much, but it’s enough to give the Jazz a roomier rear bench than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class (and no, that isn’t hyperbole). The old Jazz’s magic seats, which feature flip-up seat squabs, have been retained, allowing owners to better utilise the rear footwells for load carrying, while there are loads of neat storage solutions kicking about. Automakers around the world use their large luxury sedans as testbeds for bleeding-edge tech — a lot of it is ridiculous, but a lot of it becomes practical (think heated seats) or even required by law (think anti-lock brakes or stability control). The base model is the 740i with a 3-liter, 320-horsepower TwinPower inline six starting at $81,300. above that is the 750i xDrive with a redesigned 4. 4-liter, 445-horsepower twin turbo V-8 starting at $97,400. The 740e xDrive plug-in hybrid joins... Both the 740i and 750i xDrive will be sold only in long-wheelbase configurations in the US. That means that, at least for the moment, we'll be losing quite a few US configurations: the current 7 is available in a short-wheelbase version, a diesel,... It starts with the key — the optional Display Key, to be specific, which looks like a larger version of BMW's standard wireless fob with a full color touchscreen embedded in it. From there, you can control car functions from afar — pre-heating on... The fob can charge while it's inside the car, but if it dies, don't worry: there's a second battery that'll make sure it just acts like a regular wireless key until you have a chance to recharge.
