DETROIT (Bloomberg) -- Fiat is spinning off Ferrari later this year, losing its top luxury brand. CEO Sergio Marchionne badly needs Maserati to fill the vacuum. Ferrari’s power, prestige and profits have helped bankroll Dodges, Jeeps, Fiats and Chryslers that account for most of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ revenue. Betting that Maserati can play a similar role, Marchionne is adding an SUV and coupe to the model lineup and opening plush U. S. dealerships from Westport, Conn. “Maserati is very important,” Marchionne said in an interview. After the Ferrari spinoff, “Maserati becomes the most coveted, exclusive brand that we have. Maserati’s reputation for performance is well established, and luxury autos are selling briskly in the U. S. But that segment of the market is crowded and aggressively contested by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Lexus. For Marchionne to succeed, wealthy Americans will have to see Maserati’s $69,800 entry- level Ghibli sedan as a viable alternative to the BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class. Through April, vehicle sales fell 9 percent to 7,306. First-quarter profit sank 39 percent to $40 million, a decline Fiat attributed to a slowdown in China. “Some of the dealers, with the help of Maserati, got a little bit aggressive on discounting that vehicle, so it kind of lost its Maserati coolness,” said Mark Akbar of AutoNation Inc. Car and Driver rolled into the '90s the way General Norman Schwarzkopf's troops rolled into Kuwait. Nissan and Toyota went after Cadillac, Lincoln, and the Germans by starting their own luxury divisions. It was rumored that Lexus required fewer hours to screw together an LS400 than Mercedes needed to repair problems on each S-class after assembly. The Germans responded by changing their production methods and introducing a slew of models, including SUVs built in America. At General Motors, market share slid from 46 percent in 1978 to 34 percent in 1992 as GM's sales kept shrinking. The truck division, formerly led by Bob Lutz, conjured up the 1991 Explorer , which infected the American public with an epidemic of family SUVs that remains virulent today. Chrysler, having entered the decade under the aging Lee Iacocca, extruding one K-car clone after another, ended it slumping badly after CEO Bob Eaton sold out to Daimler. In between, the company spit out the sexiest cars and trucks in the business, including the Shelby Cobrainspired Viper.
