The Lexus LFA supercar was a long time coming. and when it appeared on the market in late 2010 as a performance icon for the Lexus brand—years later and far more expensive than originally intended—there was definitely a lot more to this model than chasing Ferrari and Lamborghini. The LFA was only sold for two years, and only 500 were made. Yet it seems that the bigger halo that this model has cast over the brand is still very much alive—in the performance light that it’s cast over the entire lineup, and in what’s been handed down from the tremendous engineering effort that went... “We still get a lot of publicity from that car,” said Mark Templin, vice president for Lexus International, as we caught up with him at the New York Auto Show last week. “The request was a place for our loyal Lexus customers who drove LSs and such to move up to. maybe a $120,000 car and not a $375,000 car. “As we kept developing it, it kept getting better and better—from steel to aluminum and carbon fiber, and more expensive with it,” he recalled. And the influence of that LFA development is spreading through the lineup, Templin promises, in steering and suspension, for instance. “Everything we learned from the LFA is trickling down into every other product in the lineup,” he said. A slightly damaged example of the Lexus LFA is currently being offered for sale in the Netherlands. The Lexus LFA is one rare exotic ride with only 500 examples being put together and if you’ve dreamed about owning such a model, this might be your chance. The Japanese based automaker has put together the Lexus LFA between 2010 and 2012 in Motomachi, Toyota City, Japan. The model was offered in a single body style, a two-door coupe, and it had a front mid-engine and a rear-wheel drive layout. The track-tuned variant has made its debut in 2012, with a price of 445,000 USD, being basically one of the most expensive Japanese road cars ever produced. Power to the LFA was provided by a 4. 8 liter V10 engine, producing 560 HP (412 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. Now, it finally has landed a new product, one just as niche and high... The backlot LFA Works at Toyota’s Motomachi assembly plant in Toyota City has been tasked with hand building the limited-run car partly because of its craftsmanship and attention to detail. And also because the Mirai, with its dedicated platform and hydrogen-powered drivetrain replete with mammoth fuel tanks, is better built by hand than in Toyota’s ultra-efficient factories. In fact, production is so limited -- to just 700 vehicles in the first year -- that Toyota is already warning of delivery delays. Toyota now has 200 orders for the car, and people ordering one today will have to wait until next summer to get theirs, said Masamoto Maekawa, executive vice president for domestic sales. Toyota is building each car to order, not en masse, partly because it wants to prudently match output to demand and not overproduce, said Yoshikazu Tanaka, chief engineer of the Mirai and former chief engineer for the Prius plug-in hybrid. The Mirai’s drivetrain and other components are manufactured at Toyota’s Honsha plant in Toyota City, and the car is assembled at the nearby Motomachi plant, in the same workshop that made exactly just 500 Lexus LFA V10 sports cars from 2010 to...
