Ask any young boy to name their coolest car, they'll likely pick a Jeep or a truck. And I drove it in it's off-roading debut at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah earlier this week. Full-size Jeep pickups or Jeep Wrangler pickups disappeared from Detroit's lineup after 1988, but the Chrysler-owned division's history-minded design team seems intent on bringing it back in classic form. Pricey JK8 Wrangler-to-pickup conversion kits directly from Jeep have been around since last year's Safari (and AEV's been building the amazing Brute conversion kit for years), but this week marked the eye-catching, bright red J12's first public... True masters of the past, Jeep's design team said they wanted to create something that looked like that old truck your grandpa took fishing all the time. The old Kaiser facade is familiar and likeable, and by lovingly recreating the long-departed truck's facial details, Jeep had scores of people fawning over their concept truck at the 2012 Easter Jeep Safari this week. It turned heads wherever it went around Moab's extreme Jeep-packed streets, looking like something Clint Eastwood's character, Walt Kowalski, in Grand Torino would have been comfortable. That’s Grandpa’s Jeep in a Box. When we were out in Moab last month, virtually everyone had a story about a personal experience with a Jeep J-series. As a senior designer in the Jeep studio, he has unparalleled access to the corporate parts bin and, by association, to the extensive collection of performance and appearance parts that trade under the Mopar brand name. “Not to mention some pretty select Dumpsters,” laughs Evans, a sentiment echoed by fellow Jeep enthusiast Mark Allen, who just happens to be the head of Jeep Design. (Allen would later lead us away from the off-road area—it’s used by Jeep to help certify its vehicles’ Trail Rated badging—by drifting his Grand Cherokee SRT8 around long, sweeping gravel-strewn turns. Your columnist was, as always on this nightmare stretch, in the middle lane. Venture into the outside lane and it won’t be long before some black Terminator cruiser with a bull nose and quiet, understated Third Reich radiator grille is on your tail. At such moments, I long to have a sign light up in my rear window which reads: “I am doing the national speed limit and would prefer to stay alive. Terminator will carry on doing 98mph, as is the right of men driving expensive penis extensions , and force you out of the way, except – oh, God – now there’s no room in the middle lane, where everyone is doing 70mph. So you have no alternative except to put your foot on the floor and break the speed limit, to avoid being mown down. Safely back in the packed middle lane, you decide to do as the law instructs and get into the inside lane.
