Infiniti QX56 And QX80 Recalled For Airbag Shrapnel Worries - The Car Connection

Nissan North America is issuing a recall of some 2013 Infiniti QX56 and 2014 Infiniti QX80 sport-utility vehicles over concerns that the airbag could malfunction, potentially sending sharp metal fragments into occupants. In affected models, the inflator for the driver’s frontal airbag might have been manufactured with the incorrect part. The QX56 and QX80 recall definitely doesn’t cover all 2013 or 2014 model-year examples of this vehicle, which was essentially the same but carried over with a different badge (2014 QX80 replacing 2013 QX56). While the recall covers 1,848 vehicles,... Beginning by late December, Infiniti will be notifying owners, and dealers will replace the airbag inflator, free of charge. “None of the potentially affected driver’s front airbag inflators were installed in any other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles in the United States,” the automaker assured in a document notifying the government. Takata says defective airbags made as early as 2008 - Tech Times

In a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and released by the agency on Friday, Takata says it has been manufacturing flawed air bags in its facility in Monclova, Mexico and selling them to automakers since 2008.... Car manufacturers in the United States have recalled up to 10 million vehicles equipped with Takata-manufactured air bags, citing a variety of reasons for their recalls, including manufacturing and design flaws and incorrect installations. In its report, Takata says the ruptures seen on the air bags in recalled General Motors vehicles had a "very different" pattern from the other recalled cars with Takata air bags. The latest recall made due to the air bags involves Nissan's Infiniti QX56 luxury sport utility vehicle. Infiniti QX56, Nissan Armada to Go Separate Ways - Car and Driver

The next-generation Infiniti QX56 full-size SUV will be the final Infiniti to separate itself from platform sharing with its Nissan brethren. The QX56, which debuted for 2004, is a mechanical brother to the Nissan Armada, both of which are built at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi, plant. But the next-generation QX56 is expected to move to the architecture used by the Patrol luxury SUV, which has attained semi-cult status in other parts of the world. The original QX56 did not meet expectations, admits Mark Igo, vice-president and general manager for Infiniti in North America, in an interview with Car and Driver at the L. A. auto show. Now the automaker is discussing what the Infiniti SUV needs for the next generation, centering on the idea of splitting off from the platform it shares with the Armada. "More elegance would be great," Igo tells us. "The QX56 could migrate to [the Patrol architecture] if it could meet the size needed for the U. S. We couldn't shrink the QX for the U.
