It would be a lot easier to love this car, the Crosstour, if Honda didn’t do such a good job with the Accord and CR-V. As it is, though, the Crosstour seems like a bit of a misfit that is outshined in some ways by those other cars on your Honda dealer’s lot. The Crosstour is a beefed-up, all-wheel-drive cousin of the Accord that takes advantage of America’s insatiable appetite for crossover vehicles. A car that rides a few inches higher than the Accord and is marketed to the ever-popular “active lifestyle” buyer must have seemed like a surefire way for a Honda exec to climb the corporate ladder. If you want a Crosstour that gets better gas mileage, has sportier handling, looks prettier, goes faster and costs less money, you can get that. The Crosstour does have some advantages, though, chiefly for people who want an upscale feeling and like the way it looks. My test car certainly felt that way, with a tightly built cabin and squeak-free ride that reminds me why so many people love their Hondas. While the base engine is a 2. 4-liter four-cylinder that makes 192 horsepower, I don’t recommend it. The Honda Crosstour isn't the return of the Accord Wagon that many missed from generations past. Instead, it's a tweener crossover vehicle with a hatchback shape that's less practical than a wagon or full-figured crossover, with styling that doesn't share the Accord sedan's taut lines. Its major selling point, aside from a little more cargo space, is that it offers all-wheel drive, while all Accord four-doors make do with front-wheel drive. When the Crosstour first hit showrooms, it was actually called Accord Crosstour. SInce then, it has dropped the Accord name, while the Accord itself has moved on to a new generation, leaving the Crosstour behind as somewhat of an orphan. So now the Crosstour is simply a husky Accord relative, with more sluggish handling. At least at first look, the Crosstour teases a lot more utility and versatility than Accord sedans. Though originally considered to be an innovative optional version of the highly successful Honda Accord – it never really caught on and Honda finally dropped the Accord name association with Crosstour some three years ago as part of a major refresh. As we see it, the Crosstour’s quirky styling (which tries to bridge the best of an Accord sedan with a CUV) does not resonate with today’s customer who is wanting a purpose designed CUV or SUV. Call it whatever they like, the Crosstour is still a Honda Accord sedan with a hatch. Honda, in the face of Crosstour sales that are in free fall (likely less than 12,000 in 2014), needs to figure out if the Crosstour should continue in their lineup and, if so, what they need to do to give it purposeful identity and capability that...
