Ford Racing really wants you to mod EcoBoost engines - RoadandTrack.com (blog)
Ford is putting EcoBoost engines in just about everything they build, and Ford Racing wants you to modify them. Or, at least, tweak the software with Ford-developed calibrations loaded into the ECU with a Ford Racing ProCal handset , which plugs into the diagnostic port and controls the typical variables you'd expect: throttle mapping, idle speed, waste... It's not quite as sexy as bolting up a new intake and hotter cams, but then again, these gains are not expensive (the handset is $595 from Ford Racing) and if you use Ford Racing calibrations it won't void the warranty. Bolt up a bunch of non-supported aftermarket parts and you're S. O. L. It's a proprietary aftermarket, essentially. That being said, if you don't care about your warranty, Ford Racing will gladly sell you whatever you'd like. They don't care, as they're not on the hook for warranty claims. Ford has also been working with real third-party aftermarket suppliers to develop EcoBoost suitable components, especially for the Mustang. Ford is pushing the aftermarket hard on the EcoBoost-equipped pony cars. Source: www.roadandtrack.com
Saleen S302 Black Label - Top Speed
Though Saleen named it the “Black Label,” the Mustang tuner extraordinaire coated this S302 Mustang in a bright yellow hue that it named California Sunset – there are 23 colors to choose from for the S302 Black Label. Saleen spent time massaging the Mustang’s bodywork in creating the S302, tweaking its aerodynamics to deliver the perfect balance of low drag and high downforce. The end result is a car that is 1. 5 inches longer up front and nearly 2 inches longer in the rear, with a larger airfoil to increase downforce. Specific additions to the Saleen’s body include a custom front fascia with a high-flow radiator intake, a front air vane with brake cooling, a high-downforce front splitter, a special rear fascia with integrated exhaust exits, and the traditional... Interior The interior also received a fair bit of modification from the folks at Saleen. Also included is a set of white-faced gauges, a twin-gauge pod, embroidered floor and trunk mats, illuminated Saleen doorsill plates, a Saleen steering wheel badge, and Steve Saleen’s signature on the dashboard,. Under here, there is a retuned version of the Ford Coyote 5. 0-liter V-8. Thanks to a twin-screw supercharger, high-performance recalibration, high-volume intercoolers, 54-pound fuel injectors, a cold-air. Source: www.topspeed.com

Most turbo-equipped vehicles are also quieter due to the turbo itself acting as a sort of muffler. If you need more horsepower and torque without a lot of hassle, a turbo kit is a great way to go and will accomplish this goal with minimal effort.Boost can become an addiction. If you have ridden in a car with a turbocharger then you have probably felt the incredible surge of power as the motor comes into the boost range. While superchargers compress air by using your vehicle's crankshaft for propulsion, turbo kits use exhaust pressure to spool the turbo, which draws in ambient air and forces it through to the intake manifold (usually going through an intercooler in the process). The result is a large increase in intake pressure and more power when additional fuel is also introduced into the combustion chamber. Most turbo kits will come with everything you need to completely install them, including a fuel management system. The turbocharger is essentially a compressor that is driven by engine exhaust. The exhaust spins an impeller with a turbine on the end that compresses air into the intake manifold generating boost. This design is extremely popular on modern vehicles, but its history goes all the way back to 1905 when a Swiss inventor patented the first turbocharger. In the early years turbos were popular on aircraft engine because they helped negate some of the power loss form operating at altitude. Today they are used in numerous applications from drag racing to long haul trucking. These little power boosters have really proven their worth.
FAQ's
Q: How do you install a turbo kit?A: Turbochargers should be installed by professionals if you have no experience with turbo installations. If you've done the basic bolt-on performance modifications to your car (intake, header, exhaust) and know your way around your engine, then you might be capable of doing the install yourself. Normal installation depending on the vehicle takes around 20-25 hours in most cases, but depends on whether custom work needs to be done. The turbo manifold that comes with the kit replaces the factory exhaust manifold. The turbo doesn't replace anything assuming this is a turbo kit and not a turbo upgrade kit. The turbo is mounted to a flange on the turbo manifold. Remember the turbo is spooled by the exhaust gases, so once the gases pass through the turbo manifold, it spools the turbo.Q: Is there a pre-condition my vehicle needs to meet in order to be able to handle a turbo kit?A: Any vehicle can be turbocharged but you must consider whether all of the engine, driveline, and chassis parts can handle big power increases. Most aftermarket turbocharger kits for naturally aspirated cars recommend running no more than 6-8 psi to prevent engine damage.
Q: What do turbo kits come with?A: Complete turbo kits normally include the manifold, turbocharger, intake, down pipe, fuel management unit and all lines and hoses needed. You need to purchase intercoolers, piping, blow-off valves separately in most cases, unless otherwise noted in our product descriptions.
Q: What is a turbo kit? Why buy a turbo kit?A: Think of a turbocharger as a fan that is blowing compressed air into your engine. The more air you give your engine, the more power your engine can give you. The extra air adds oxygen so you can burn more fuel. Turbochargers are powered by the exhaust gases generated by your engine after combustion. The time the turbo takes to spool up is seen by the driver as lag, or delay time. The driver may mash the throttle, but the engine won't produce power until the turbocharger is up to speed. The reason a turbo kit is such a great purchase is that it takes a tremendous amount of money and time to successfully increase the power of a naturally aspirated engine. Expensive head packages, along with expensive bottom block parts, will surely put a dent in your wallet while only making meager horsepower gains. With a bolt-on turbocharger kit you can obtain instant, very dramatic horsepower gains with less time and money while still having the potential for upgrading. The whistle of a blow off valve, the roar from an external wastegate, and the burst of power that makes your engine feel like it doubled in size, how could you resist?

Ford Ranger 2.3 Turbo | GenHO - Generation: High Output
One might assume, that since the Ford Ranger came from the factory with the 2.3 “Pinto” engine, and the turbocharged SVO Mustang also used a 2.3, that it ought to be a simple matter to just scrape all the turbo stuff off of a Mustang or Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (or Cougar XR7 or Merkur XR4Ti), slap it onto a Ranger and be done with it.
Well, it’s not quite that easy. The main difference between the turbo and non-turbo engines were the pistons. The cast pistons in the NA motors really aren’t good for much more than 5 or 6 pounds of boost. Most people don’t bother with that and end up at least swapping the pistons out for some forged ones, if not just dropping the whole turbo motor in which I’m assuming this guy did, judging by the valve cover.
I’m sure Rangers are fairly light, and that 6 pounds of boost may seem like enough to really wake the motor up, but it starts to seem kind of lame when you consider that the turbo motors were putting out 15 psi stock and the early models were capable of around 25 psi with not much more than a $25 eBay manual boost controller. 1984-86 turbo 2.3s came with a Garrett T3 which was capable of more boost than the later models which used an IHI turbo that was not quite as desirable.
One thing the later turbo motors did have that was nice however, was an intercooler, although it was mounted in the least ideal place ever- right above the hot ass exhaust manifold. Most people don’t leave this intercooler there for long before switching to a front-mounted unit though. I actually used to own an ’84 Thunderbird Turbo and when I got it, it had what I was told was a pretty rare Spearco/Ford front mount intercooler on it, but this was years ago. Back then, the main option for adding a FMIC was to take one off of an Isuzu NPR diesel or a Volvo. Nowadays, much better intercoolers are a dime a dozen on eBay so I’m sure it’s not as big of a deal any more.
A front mounted intercooler, a boost controller and a better flowing exhaust (or at least a better flowing downpipe) ought to bring any turbo 2.3 motor to the point of being a lot of fun, but after that, things start getting pretty extreme. There don’t seem to be a whole lot of performance parts for the 2.3 that don’t involve more boost, and that’s why people do crazy things like fit DOHC Volvo heads on them.
Anyways, back to the Ranger. It’s exactly what I want to see when I go to a car show. It looks like someone built it to have fun with and for no other reason. The blow off valve is a little flashy, but I can overlook that. The rest of the truck makes me believe that whoever built this thing really isn’t trying to impress anybody. If he were trying to appeal to anyone aesthetically it would be slammed to the ground with ghost flames on it or something lame like that. And if he were trying to impress anyone with his Earth-crushing performance, there would be a V8 in it. The fact that this truck has neither of those things when it so easily could have makes me like it that much more.
The Ford 2.3L turbo engine in a Ranger is a pretty common swap, but it’s still a hell of a lot more interesting to me than most of the stuff at the Pavilions these days, which lately seems to consist of handful of old guys with new Corvettes, some “stanced” bullshit something or other with a bunch of swag fags crowding around it, and several dozen early 2000’s Chevy SUVs with huge wheels but otherwise stock. It’s getting old.
Hopefully people keep doing things like this.
