All-Star Wade Davis continually sharpens his mind and body - Kansas City Star

On winter nights in New York’s Hudson Valley, Wade Davis climbs into his 2010 Ford F-150 and uses his headlights to illuminate the snow-covered roads. Then he points his truck toward a gym on State Route 17K in Montgomery, N. Y. , the space where he transformed his body en route to becoming baseball’s most reliable reliever. Davis makes a 20-minute drive from his home in Ulster County for workouts that start around 9 p. m. He spends the rest of the night absorbing challenges from his trainer, stepping through ladder drills, leaping hurdles and straining himself with... “He wants to come in and dominate things,” said Davis’ trainer, Niyan Oladipo. “He wants to do it. He’s going to put in the work to get it right and be the best at it. ”. The journey from also-ran starter to All-Star reliever began here. Davis never worked with a personal trainer before he met Oladipo after the 2012 season. In their second winter together, months before Kansas City shifted him into the bullpen for 2014, Davis revamped his physique. He added about 20 pounds, most of it muscle, building a base that set the stage for the devastation Davis has wrought upon the American League these past two seasons. Davis combines a vicious, three-pitch arsenal with a pristine delivery and a keen intellect, say coaches, teammates, opponents and rival evaluators. “I’ve never seen somebody absolutely dominate hitters the way Wade did last year, and the way he’s doing this year,” fellow Royal Luke Hochever. 2014 Ford Fusion recalled two times in a week - CNNMoney

All told, more than 1 million car and truck recall notices were issued in the last few days. The largest recall is 546,000 Fusions and MKZ from the 2013 to 2014 model years, and the 2011-2014 Ford Fiesta which are being recalled for problems with a latch that can cause a door to open. Ford said it's aware of two customers who said they were hit with the doors when they bounced back while attempting to close them and one other customer who said an unlatched door swung open to hit another vehicle while it was being parked. Ford originally announced this recall on April 24 and expanded it on Friday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took the unusual step of issuing its own statement urging owners of these recalled cars to get them fixed as soon as possible due to the risk. Ford is also recalling 50,000 of the 2014 Focus, Edges and Transit Connect as well as a 2014-2015 Fiesta for a fuel pump issue that can cause the pump to seize and the car to stall while being driven. In addition, there were 546,000 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ from 2013 to 2015 model years, and some 2015 Ford Edges that have a problems with its steering gear motor that could result in a loss of power steering. But Ford said it is not aware of any accidents related to that problem. Another 22,600 2015 MKZ's have been recalled for problems with its parking lamp. New study focuses on untested passenger side - Automotive News

IIHS began the additional testing after discovering that some updated models had received structural reinforcements to improve crashworthiness on the driver side, where the test is normally conducted, but not on the passenger side. IIHS spokesman Russ Rader described the added testing as a "research project" intended to find out how widespread the practice is and to ensure that automakers are engineering crashworthiness improvements to both sides of a vehicle. The project's findings could prompt IIHS to add random passenger-side small-overlap crash tests to its testing regimen. "If we find that this appears to be a widespread issue, we could conduct the small-overlap test program in the same way we do the roof strength program, which is we periodically and randomly switch the side we're testing," Rader said. Lawmakers and safety advocates have long lamented that IIHS ratings' public-sector counterpart, the federal government's five-star crashworthiness rating, has lost its teeth because the testing criteria haven't been updated for years. Last week, a bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed a bill to require that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration go beyond crash tests and account for crash-avoidance technology such as automatic braking in its rating system.
