Whereas the new Jaguar-made 2. 0-litre diesels grab the limelight thanks to their eco credentials, it’s a shame the 2. 0 petrol isn’t as impressive as it could be. Poor mpg and CO2 figures mean it’ll continue to be passed over by most people. Still, it’ll be liked by some more traditional private buyers, and it brings the entry-level price down to £26,990. At £26,990, the 2. 0-litre four-cylinder petrol turbo is the entry point to XE ownership. And while the Ingenium diesels and supercharged 3. 0-litre V6 are built with great pride by Jaguar, the humble 2. 0-litre is a hangover from the days when the company was owned by Ford. It’s available with 197bhp or 236bhp, and both versions claim fuel economy of 37. 7mpg and CO2 emissions of 179g/km. Its nearest competitor, the 186bhp BMW 320i Sport , returns a much more wallet-friendly 51. 4mpg and, with CO2 emissions of 129g/km, is VED-exempt for the first year of tax. To try to make the 197bhp 2. 0 as kind as possible to the environment and your wallet – despite setting off on the wrong foot – the normally smooth-shifting eight-speed auto is a little reluctant to kick down to aid overtaking. The new Mercury Racing Verado 400R is a potent replacement for the Mercury Racing Verado 350 SCi outboard. Displacement remains 2. 6 liters, and powerhead components are similar to those developed for the Verado 350, including the water-cooled supercharger and the molded intake snorkel. The 400R uses a standard Verado cowl with racing graphics that’s more practical offshore and quieter than the 350 SCi. More good news is that the 400R will run on 89-octane fuel, thanks to a sophisticated new knock sensor it shares with the Verado 350. Mercury Racing says that feeding the 400R 91-octane gas, however, may be the best way to extract peak power in... The 400R is also available with optional joystick control when equipped with the Sport Master cambered-skeg gear case. Gear-case options include the 5. 44-inch Verado HD 1. 75:1 case or the Sport Master with either a straight or cambered skeg. The crescent-shaped Sport Master case is designed for speeds over 85 mph and features dual water pickups. Mercury Racing has also developed a heavy-duty tie bar for this engine. The radical 526-horsepower V8 that will power the Shelby GT 350 Mustang thundered to life for the first time in public outside Ford Motor Co. 's performance engineering center in Allen Park just outside Detroit Tuesday. It's the most powerful naturally aspirated street-legal engine in Ford's history. Designed to rev up to 8,250 rpm – nearly four times the revolutions per minute a run of the mill V8 might hit at highway speed – the engine sets several new marks for production engines. From the archives: 2015 Ford Mustang is ready to take on the world. The V8 features a flat-plane crankshaft, bigger engine valves and unique air intake and exhaust systems to generate extraordinary levels of power, including 429 pound feet of torque at 4,750 rpm. The engine's horsepower output of more than 100 hp per liter of displacement is almost unprecedented for an American V8 that doesn't use turbo or supercharging. In addition to bigger valves and new air intake and exhaust passages, the unusual crankshaft helps the engine use air more efficiently and rev at higher rates. The Shelby will be the only engine in production with a front-mounted flat-plane crankshaft, setting it apart even from exotic cars with six-figure price tags.
