is planning to release an all-new version of the Chevrolet Volt this fall. GM said this week that the new Volt will be able to get 53 miles of range on electric power only before its gasoline engine kicks in. That's an improvement of almost 40% over the old model. In many ways, the outgoing Volt has been a big success for GM. It delivered on all of the promises GM made for it, and it scored some of the highest customer-satisfaction ratings in the auto business. Volt owners love their cars. But in one big important way, the Volt wasn't a success: Sales never lived up to GM's expectations. Sales of the Volt were never good, and they have been getting worse. Through July, U. S. sales of the Chevy Volt are down over 34% over year-ago totals. And it's not like last year's sales were great: GM sold just 18,805 Volts in the U. S. in 2014, down more than 18% from the year before. In fact, the current Volt has been falling short of sales expectations ever since it was launched. The author compared the carbon footprint of the Model S to various cars and came up with the average baseload for electricity mix for the US in grams carbon per kwh. With the electricity mix, a Model S compares to an ICE car getting about 29 miles per gallon. This would be a mix of about 30% coal, natural gas, nuke et al. Let’s look at the prime market for the Model X, which is assumed to be California. Here’s California’s mix: NG, 52%, Nuke, 10. Hydro, 8. wind, 10, solar, 9, GT, 6, and biomass 3%. Let’s say California’s emissions intensity is as follows: 0. 52 x 1. 21 lb CO2 = 0. 63 lbs / kwh. Based on the link above, Tesla Model S efficiency is 448 wh/mile. Overall sales for August continued at a high level, exceeding both July 2015 although slightly less than August 2014. The main reason for the decline is due to the calendar, namely Labor Day last year (September 1) was counted in August sales,... Overall sales in recent months have been strong, with trucks increasing significantly offsetting a decline in car sales. Hybrids were up from previous months, while the other categories were more or less in line with previous months. Sales for full electric vehicles were up slightly from July of this year and down significantly from August 2014. The LEAF had very strong sales in August 2014 (almost 3,200), while sales were only 1,393 this August. Since April, production of the LEAF has been at modest levels in anticipation of the updated Model Year 2016 product. Model S sales were also modest, due in part to downtime as Tesla begins to prepare for Model X production. We estimate that Model S sales in August were ahead of the results from last August. Plug in hybrids had a moderate month, with most vehicles selling at a similar level to July 2015.
