However, in 2007 Chevy released an SS edition of the HHR and this wasn’t just a badge and braggadocio package either, the SS walked the walk. In fact, Chevy had the audacity at the time to favorably compare the HHR SS to Mazda’s benchmark Speed3. Car and Driver, in a preview test, announced that well, yeah, kinda-maybe. The SS takes the Delta platform and massages it with a 260-bhp turbocharged and intercooled edition of the 2. 0 Ecotec four. The cars came with launch control that, in competitive mode, holds the engine at 4,100 rpm when the clutch and accelerator are both dropped to the floor. The engine’s 260 pound-feet of torque is managed by the LSD and when it comes to torque-steer, these are said to have been tamed like Kim tamed Kanye. Sixty from zero is a 6. 3-second run, or so said the factory, and the cars can go around corners with our embarrassing themselves too. Not only that, but it’ll hold a couple of kegs in the back so you can embarrass yourself after getting your gymkhana on. Yeah, that’s right, this is a turbo-equipped, manually-gear boxed, longroof of modest size and serious cababilites. It’s all pretty stock save for the plasti-dipped wheels and badges - dude, too much time on your hands - and the SS elements butch up the retro styling in healthy but somewhat incongruous way. A woman was airlifted from the scene of a crash in Henderson County where she was seriously injured. Driving a 2008 Chevy HHR westbound on Illinois Route 96, a 33-year-old woman drove across the opposite direction of traffic on an “s” curve and went into a ditch, according to the Illinois State Police. The crash happened Thursday, August 13, 2015. Police said the vehicle drove through the ditch more than 400 feet until it reached an open field, where it then rolled several times. Source: wqad.com

The Mazda is less than an inch longer and the HHR 4. 8 inches taller (HHR does, after all, stand for Heritage High Roof), but comparing the two still seems a little like dropping a kitten into a terrarium with a scorpion. Don't be misled, though, because in the all-important power-to-weight-ratio battle, the HHR proves it has some venom on tap. the HHR SS weighs an estimated 3300. Although the Mazdaspeed packs 263 ponies from its turbocharged 2. 3-liter, the SS's turbocharged four—the same as found in the Pontiac Solstice GXP , Saturn Sky Red Line , and upcoming Chevy Cobalt SS —manages... For those who are still skeptical, consider that the HHR SS includes some pretty nifty performance tuning tricks such as launch control. With the standard StabiliTrak control in competitive mode, the engine is limited to 4100 rpm until the tires hook up.
