The specifications of the updated 2016 Cadillac ELR range-extended electric car were released this morning, and one big question has been answered. But it boasts better performance, slightly higher electric range, more standard equipment, and a price cut of $10,000. DON'T MISS: 2016 Chevy Volt: Bigger Battery, More Motor Power, New Range Extender Engine Details. Instead, the 2016 ELR will continue with its existing 17. 1-kilowatt-hour battery pack and 1. 4-liter four-cylinder engine. Acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph has been cut to 6. 4 seconds, GM says, a 1. 5-second reduction. Top speed is higher too, at 106 mph in standard form or 130 mph with a special performance package that also upgrades the suspension, brakes, and tires. The ELR's all-electric range, which was rated at 37 miles for the 2014 model year, is now estimated at 39 miles, according to GM. Its efficiency also rises slightly, from 82 to about 85 MPGe for the new 2016 version. A few days ago I reported that the Cadillac ELR would not be replaced after its product cycle ran out… and just how long that product cycle was is anybody’s guess, because GM wasn’t talking. That led to Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen commenting on our post, saying that the ELR wasn’t dead, and that a host of improvements were right around the corner. Turns out, the guy was telling the truth, and the 2016 Cadillac ELR is in every way a better value, from price to performance. There’s a long list of enhancements for the 2016 Cadillac ELR, and perhaps the most meaningful change is a steep drop in price. Cadillac quotes the 2016 ELR as costing $58,499 after the $7,500 Federal tax rebate, putting its MSRP right around $65,999. That’s about $10,000 less than the 2014 ELR, though incentives took as much as $20,000 off the $76,000 original MSRP. Considering the ELR was looking rather dead after a new version missed its debut at the LA Auto Show , this is a surprise move from GM. It displays either Google maps or Apple maps on the display screen which has much improved resolution over the old Volt. What is the second generation Volt like to drive. The first thing I noticed straight away was that the car had a tighter, quieter drive to it. The suspension is definitely better and overall a much more luxurious drive. The new car has a reworked regenerative braking system which the driver can control using a stalk on the steering column. Says kickincanda , “When driving in low and sport mode (which is my daily drive preference) regen feels the same when letting off the accelerator. However, I had the opportunity to use the regen paddle, which is located only on the left side of the steering wheel, and it slows down the car significantly quicker.
