If you squint hard at the label on the Cadillac CTS-V high-performance sedan that hits showrooms soon, you will see a subtle but telling shift in Cadillac’s pricing strategy. In recent years, Cadillac has tried to price its new entries at parity with the Germans, drawing scorn from critics and dealers. The ATS compact sedan launched in 2012 and the CTS midsize sedan that rolled out a year later are prime examples. Eventually they needed big incentives to move them, harming residual values and Cadillac’s brand image. Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen wasn’t around when those calls were made. While he has defended Cadillac’s pricing, he also has hinted that he might have done things differently. The CTS-V and the little-brother ATS-V sedan and coupe now hitting showrooms offer our first glimpse into the pricing approach under the de Nysschen regime. (ATS-V pricing also comes in below its rivals, such as the BMW M3 and M4. ). The discounts to the Germans reflect what de Nysschen & Co. know all too well: Cadillac faces brand-image headwinds, while the cachet of BMW or Mercedes supports a... Your first (and second, and probably third) impression after driving the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is likely to be "wow, that's fast," but the 640HP car showcases another type of speed. Caddy's oft-maligned CUE infotainment has also been supercharged, with the new 8-inch touchscreen system addressing complaints around speed as well as paving the way for platforms like CarPlay and Android Auto. Question is, has Cadillac done enough. Cadillac is now using Freescale's i. MX6 DL chip, a Cortex A9 mustering 4,000... In contrast, the old "Triton" system had a trio of ARM11 cores - for 1,440 DMIPS total - and a 10 MT/s IMG SGX535 GPU. Altogether, Cadillac tells me, the 2016 system should deliver 3x the CPU performance and 4x the GPU performance, affecting not only the experience while driving but how soon CUE is ready after you hit the starter button. CUE still suffers from a tendency toward UI overlap, particularly when you move your hand toward the touchscreen and the motion sensor triggers the unfurling of the function bars. Cadillac is giving the CTS Sedan many notable changes and updates for the 2016 model year. On the outside, the Majestic Plum Metallic, Black Diamond Tricoat, and Opulent Blue Metallic colors are replaced with Cocoa Bronze Metallic, Moonstone Metallic, and Stellar Black Metallic — all of which are extra cost colors. Inside, the 2016 CTS does away with three interior colors, including Twilight Blue with Jet Black accents, Light Cashmere with Medium Cashmere accents, and Jet Black with Jet Black accents. they’re complemented by changes to the following color combinations: Light Platinum with Jet Black accents and Jet Black with Jet Black accents, both of which now include Sapele high-gloss wood trim. On the powertrain side, the 2016 Cadillac CTS Sedan does away with the 3. 6L V6 LFX engine , as well as the associated 6-speed automatic transmission and 3. 45 ratio rear axle. In their place are the new 3. 6L V6 LGX with Active Fuel Management and automatic start/stop plus an external engine oil cooler, 8-speed automatic transmission (when mated to the LGX and LTG motors) and a 2. 85 rear axle ratio, respectively.
