BMW performs no such hedging as to its definition of “is. ” It denotes a higher level of performance to its customers, and the latest car to wear that suffix, the 135is , is as suave as Slick Willie. To create the newest “is” car, BMW tuned its N55 turbocharged inline-six to make 320 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, increases of 20 and 17. Thin-spoke 18-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and the lower-case “s” on the trunk are further 135is... BMW equipped this car with a suspension identical to that of a 135i equipped with the M Sport package, and it favors handling over ride quality. Freeway expansion joints cause the 135is to buck, and over medium-size road blemishes, there is considerable impact harshness. The freeway is where we grew to seriously dislike the standard-issue performance exhaust. In complete contrast to the highway behavior, the sounds generated by the inline-six at or near full throttle couldn’t be more pleasing. Despite a turbocharger, this six-cylinder sounds richer than many V-8s. The slightly stiff suspension is at home hustling down corner-filled back roads. 9 fewer inches than that of the current 3-series—make it a tossable delight, despite the heavy-for-its-size 3335-pound curb weight. The electromechanical power steering is tuned to be noticeably lighter than on bigger BMW models like the 5- and 6-series, which makes the car feel supremely agile. Curiously, turning off the stability control system automatically puts the car in Comfort mode, but that’s not a bad thing: The more measured throttle mapping allows for easier modulation. The sprint from zero to 60 mph takes less than five seconds, BMW says. With its different driving modes, it can act as an especially well-behaved compact, benefitting from the stiff architecture and the comfort features that are shared with BMW's more upscale offerings. BMW, of course, is particularly proud of its telematics and connectivity systems. The 1-series is a prime example of what the future has in store: It’s fitted with a SIM card and, Tesla-like, can receive instant online system updates from BMW. The Six Says, “See Ya. ” The 1-series is slightly narrower and significantly shorter than the 2-series coupe, yet it offers more space and practicality. DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: This 2013 BMW 135is is what a BMW sports sedan/coupe is supposed to feel like. Coming of age in the '80s and '90s, the E30/36 3-series was the aspirational daily driver for an import-minded enthusiast, and it was because of the characteristics this 135is possesses. Hell, the car even kind of looks like a vintage 3-series, particularly on the inside where far more black plastic resides than one would expect in a nearly $50,000 car. the difference, and in my opinion the tiebreaker, is that BMW uses a proper inline six-cylinder engine instead of the flailing-piston unbalanced V that's become so popular with packaging efficiency experts these days. Instant throttle response, a well of low-end torque and a deep exhaust bellow all greet every stab of the throttle, while the steering seems to almost follow the driver's field of vision. of course, it's the driver's inputs that are maneuvering the car, but it can be done with such intuition with the 1-series that it approaches that oft-implied ideal of telepathy. That BMW has created a driver's car here is apparent in the details. The 1-series also gets the old BMW orange center stack controls with vague button labeling, plus lower-dash plastics that would be questionable in a $15,000 Nissan Versa. Source: autoweek.com
