OROSCO: I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed driving this truck, especially since I'm not a fan of big trucks--and because the look of this Ridgeline makes me think of a dog. Yes, the shape of the cab and the odd roofline that leads into the bed made me think of Clifford the Big Red Dog. I liked the power and the heavy feel, which made me feel safe despite the rollover warning on my visor. I also liked that there was lots of room in the front and rear seats. It's like a low-tech/high-tech split personality, and I didn't like it. But I loved how quickly the defrosters worked, and the heated seats were great. SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: It's hard to argue with the simple practicality of the Ridgeline, which only seems to get better and smarter with age. On the other hand, the trucks that fit this segment are few and are either smaller, like the Toyota Tacoma, or much bigger and heavier, like the Chevrolet Avalanche. If you want the compromise vehicle, and you're willing to compromise on load and towing to get it, the Ridgeline remains a singular value. As full-size pickups take a hit from high gas prices, a vehicle like Honda’s Ridgeline should be perfectly placed as an alternative for truck buyers. That’s why Honda has given the Ridgeline some subtle updates for 2009, with minor design tweaks to the front end and interior. Most of the changes, however, won’t make or break a buying decision between an ‘08 and an ‘09. In fact, we’re not sure anyone will even notice there were changes made. The biggest change inside is to the instrument cluster, it seems, and there’s a new steering wheel. On the power front, the 2009 gets three — yes, three — more horsepower than the 2008, up to 250 hp, but towing capacity remains the same at 5,000 pounds, as does its mileage rating, at 15/20 mpg city/highway. The Ridgeline comes in four trims: RT, RTS, RTL and RTL with Navigation. We’ve picked out the most interesting of the 50 changes Honda provided us with below. Basically, the study judges which models and brands that buyers find most gratifying and appealing in 77 categories. In the new survey, Hyundai is the top mainstream brand. The results roughly mirror the way things turned out in J. D. Powers' far most closely watched survey, the Initial Quality Study, released earlier this year. Porsche won that one, too, and Jaguar was second. Hyundai, for the first time, scored tops in both surveys among non-premium brands. Overall, the APEAL study's scores are virtually unchanged from a year ago. The only category that showed significant change was fuel economy, up six points, mostly because gas prices dropped, J. D. Power says. "Despite improvements this year, fuel economy continues to be the lowest-scoring category in the study by a wide margin," says Renee Stephens, vice president for U.
