Choosing the perfect name for a baby can be a difficult decision, but when Lauren Bell discovered she was having a little girl last year, she knew instantly what to call her. Lauren named her Penny, after her mother. Penny Bell was murdered 24 years ago – stabbed more than 50 times in her car. It shattered the lives of everyone in her family, causing her father Alistair – who was initially a suspect – years of depression and leading Lauren to have a breakdown at 21. Last September, she became a mother herself. ‘I knew straight away that I wanted to name the baby Penny,’ she says. ‘At first I wondered if I could say the name every day without it conjuring up all the feelings of pain associated with my mother’s death. ‘But my mum was such an effervescent, charismatic person that I realised naming my daughter after her was a way of honouring the person she was before this terrible crime happened to her.
