Jeep Grand Cherokee used car review - Drive

As the world (well, Australia anyway) rushes to buy compact and mid-sized SUVs, the concept of a full-sized off-road vehicle can start to look a bit like reheated left-overs. Given that the Jeep brand forged its reputation on the notion of going properly off-road, it's no surprise that a full-sized trail-breaker has remained in showrooms. For us, that's been the Grand Cherokee , a model that was launched here in 2011 and was immediately welcomed for its value for money. Despite that, however, the Grand Cherokee has continued to win friends and even expand its reach, largely by offering what most of the others won't or can't. While the latest Nissan Patrol is available only with a petrol engine, the grand Cherokee offered up plenty of choice. There was the three-litre turbo-diesel V6 , a 3. 6-litre petrol V6, a 5. 7-litre petrol V8 and the one everybody was talking about, the 6. 4-litre V8 petrol with a monumental 344kW and a super-car-like 0-100km/h time of five seconds dead. There were also hard-core off-roading versions with what Jeep called its Quadra-Drive all-wheel-drive system that gave extra traction in the bush, as well as a model called the SRT which was the version with all that horsepower.
