Ga. court convicts Anderson County pair of arson - Anderson Independent Mail
ELBERTON, Ga. — Jurors delivered guilty verdicts late Friday night against Jonathon Cann and Chelsea Clary, the Anderson County couple accused of driving a man’s body from South Carolina to Georgia in the trunk of a car and setting it on fire. In South Carolina, Cann and Clary both face murder charges in the death of 35-year-old Charles Paul Mills, of Townville, who was fatally shot in a mobile home on Project Road in Iva, according to the couple’s arrest warrants. This week they were on trial in Elbert County, Georgia, where Mills’ charred remains were found in his Kia Spectra. Cann and Clary were found guilty of arson, concealing Mills’ death, and multiple counts of moving property stolen from South Carolina into Georgia. Investigators say the man and his son saw a burning vehicle on Ga. 368 and stopped to see if Cann needed help when he pointed the gun. Clary, 23, of Anderson and Cann, 27, of Iva, will both be sentenced in Georgia on Tuesday. Before deliberations began, jurors heard testimony Friday from Cory Maxwell, who had been an inmate at the Elbert County jail with Cann. Maxwell testified that he heard Cann “bragging about killing somebody and burning them up. ”. Maxwell testified that he had heard Cann say he shot a man named Cowboy, which was Mills’ nickname.
