Across the pond in Britain, Land Rover began a more colonial quest over sand, dirt, rock, road and continents. Just as Jeep’s six current models are partly responsible for Chrysler’s post-bankruptcy comeback, Land Rover has been busy redesigning and expanding its luxury Range Rover SUV line. Introduced in 2006, Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport got a full redesign for 2014 and it occupies a distinctly SUV position while reaching for the more nimble feel of a crossover. Land Rover has always been more refined, as is the English way, than the proletarian Jeep but Range Rover makes no qualms about mobility targeted for the upper class. But there’s an austerity that turns me off, perhaps a stigma of Land Rovers being the car of choice for disconnected dignitaries in far-flung locales who crave admiration but dislike engagement.
