i was being a bit tongue in cheek, old Madge here seems to think jlr’s 300,000 a year is niche volume, but that is about what Kia roll out of the Slovak Republic a year. If a carmaker of any sort wants to set up shop and create jobs, what kind of govt would say “no thanks, we’ll wait for someone who wants to build a million plus cars a year”. The REAL problem is that 2/3 of population earn less than average so often people move to western Slovakia to earn more or go abroad. As Jaguar will get tax benefits and donations for at least a decade, they do not have to care about corporate tax etc. Jaguar surely knows that there are already VW, PSA and KIA here as well as suppliers/subcontractors and that there will be some pressure for paying more to qualified workforce. As a luxury brand selling expensice vehicles they have more “free room” than PSA selling c3 for 10000 EUR. Overall, it is good that they will come here and as a luxury car makes they will sell well even during a possible next crisis, what is not so good are other rather political aspects – unability to use Money from the EU properly, unability to...
