Former corrections officer dies in ATM heist; man charged with murder - Knoxville News Sentinel

KNOXVILLE - A 46-year-old Clinton woman shot during a robbery attempt this morning at a Knoxville ATM has died, and the man accused of killing her was later shot by police responding to the scene. Davida Nicholson, a former corrections officer at the Anderson County Jail, died at 9:07 a. m. at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk. Nicholson worked at the jail for about 19 months resigning from the job in September, said Lucas. Nicholson was driving a silver Mazda B4000 pickup truck when using an ATM at the TVA Employees Credit Union, 1316 Wilson Road, about 8:23 a. m. She was accompanied by her 21-year-old son, Richard Vowell, who is mentally disabled. As Nicholson was at the ATM, Brandon James Johnson, 20, approached her. Nicholson tried to drive away, but Johnson shot her with one of two handguns he carried, police said. Nicholson crashed the pickup truck into the corner of the credit union building near the ATMs. Johnson then opened fire on William Letsinger, 36, of Knoxville, DeBusk said. Johnson then returned to Nicholson's wrecked pickup truck and yanked Vowell from the passenger seat, DeBusk said. DeBusk said Johnson was struggling with Nicholson "or doing something to her" when officers. Source: www.knoxnews.com
