And why would Matheny anticipate it. Rosenthal had just pitched in both games against the White Sox and last Friday against the Mets. There also were concerns before the All-Star break about the closer’s overuse, especially after his last two shaky pre-break performances against the Pittsburgh Pirates in which he allowed four total earned runs. And because Rosenthal wanted nothing more than the ball in his control, Matheny listened to the closer, who took the mound in the top of the ninth with a 4-2 lead over the Kansas City Royals.
