Complaint alleges Brentwood group operated as PAC - The Tennessean

An initial hearing has been set for a complaint filed against a Brentwood citizens group, which alleges that the group operated as an illegal political action committee. The Tennessee Registry of Election Finance will review whether “Preserve Brentwood” operated as an unregistered PAC during May’s Brentwood municipal election. During the meeting, the TREF board will review the complaint and determine if there is enough information to move forward with the case or dismiss it. “If they move forward what they will do is issue a ‘show-cause’ notice to the group and let them... A group must register as a PAC if the group supports or opposes “two or more candidates for public office,” according to Tennessee state law. Specifically, the complaint refers to Preserve Brentwood allegedly advocating for the election of candidates Ken Travis and Tamela Soltis to the city commission board. “I believe that Preserve Brentwood is a political action committee, and I believe they are a political action committee because they’re advocating for and against candidates,” said Thomas Carr, a Brentwood resident who filed the complaint. In 2013 Carr filed a similar complaint against Preserve Brentwood alleging that the group operated as a PAC during that year’s municipal election. Source: www.tennessean.com
