Alton's Hudson drafted by Cubs; Tate Matheny picked by Red Sox - STLtoday.com

Hudson’s outlook changed considerably Tuesday afternoon when the Cubs selected him in the third round of the Major League Baseball entry draft. The 6-foot-8-inch, 220-pound lefthander from Alton High School was the seventh player chosen in the third round, the 82nd choice overall. Hudson, who has a scholarship to the University of Missouri waiting for him, is almost certain to forgo college and sign with the Chicago organization, according to his mother, Nicole. Cubs officials spoke with Hudson on Tuesday morning to make sure the sides were on the same page. Hudson compiled a 10-2 mark with a 0. 50 earned-run average in helping Alton to a 30-7 mark and a regional crown during the recently completed campaign. “The whole family is full of Cardinals fans and our friends are Cardinals fans, too,” Nicole said. But we’re Cubs fans now. Tate was with his dad, in Denver, for the special occasion. “We were sitting together when his name was read,” Mike said. Mike Matheny appeared even more excited than Tate when they saw his name appear. The 111th overall pick, Tate recently completed his junior season at Missouri State University by helping the Bears to the super regional round. Source: www.stltoday.com
