Nothing funny about Steve Martin's banjo picking - SFGate
Steve Martin fits in so well with Steep Canyon Rangers that one might think that the North Carolinia ensemble is his band. But the banjo player/comedic talent/overall Renaissance man only started collaborating with the superb bluegrass group in 2009. Steep Canyon Rangers co-founders Graham Sharp (banjo, vocals), Woody Platt (vocals, guitar) and Charles R. Humphrey III... Martin, who started playing banjo at 17, incorporated the instrument in his stand-up routines during the ’70s and even faced off with Kermit the Frog two years ago in a “Dueling Banjos” Funny or Die sketch. There’s a local connection to Steep Canyon Rangers: Fiddler Nicky Sanders is a San Francisco native who was concertmaster for the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra in Berkeley before studying at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
