Platte's Bentz honored as SD's Doctor of the Year - Daily Republic

There's fewer babies being born in Platte and less in-patient care, he said. That's why the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians named him its Family Doctor of the Year Award for 2015. "It's nice to be appreciated," Bentz said in a recent interview with The Daily Republic. "I've had some people come up and congratulate me. I think they think it means I'm the best doctor in South Dakota, and that's not really it. It doesn't mean that I'm doing anything that other men and women in my profession around the state aren't... Bentz, who has worked in Platte since 1983, has played a key role in family medicine in the state, previously serving as the president of the South Dakota Academy of Family Physicians. He's also leading the Frontier and Rural Medicine (FARM) program through the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine as Platte's local physician coordinator. He said he gets a good feeling working with future doctors. "It makes us feel good to try to teach students and help them in any way we can and have them benefit from from some of our experience," he said. One of the most pronounced differences in his time as a physician is the decrease in the number of baby deliveries. Prior to his time in Platte, Bentz said doctors told him of helping deliver as many as 100 babies a year. Source: www.mitchellrepublic.com
