2015 Chevy Silverado Midnight Edition review notes: Always bet on black

For instance, our long-term 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Crew Cab received nothing but praise in its first six months in our fleet. “The truck feels as tight, smooth and solid as the day it arrived,” said one editor. A few months later, we're

On the Road Review: Chevrolet Silverado LTZ Crew Cab - The Ellsworth American
As pickup trucks have become such a prominent part of our domestic driving fleet, their retail prices have also increased. Greater amenities, improved powertrain options, as well as luxurious appearance and interior features, have worked to increase retail sticker prices to sometimes shocking levels. Chrysler/Fiat, Ford and General Motors are all building high-end pickup trucks now with stickers well over $60,000 — an amount almost double the average transaction price for new vehicles in America, but also a retail number contributing to that... Leasing generally offers buyers lower monthly payments, puts buyers back into the market in three to four years and often creates greater brand (and dealer) loyalty. Some parts of the country see leasing as over 45 percent of new vehicle purchases. Move up to our LTZ Crew Cab sampled, at a $45,810 base price, and the payments obviously escalate dramatically. 2-liter 420-hp V-8 teamed to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, $2,495, Custom Sport package — body colored trim, chrome bumpers and 20-inch wheels, Z-71 badges, plus spray-on bedliner, $2,000, power sunroof, $995, White Diamond Paint,... Sunday Drive: 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD LTZ Crew Cab - Daily Herald
It is always a great week for Craig when a full sized pickup is involved, and now that the Silverado has had a full year of being tested out with the new redesign under it’s belt we found the new pickup to be everything and more than what we,... From the luxury laden cabin to the extreme trailering abilities this is a truck through and through and definitely a way to ‘Find New Roads’ as the new Chevy tag line suggests. We enjoyed our time last year with the Z71 version of the Silverado, but have come to find out in the 2015 edition there are some reasons to stay with what Chevy calls the 4WD version which mostly involve trailer towing. This version allows the $230 addition of chrome trailering mirrors that have a standard mirror on top and a curved trailering mirror on the bottom to see more of what is behind or being towed by the truck. This addition may seem like a small thing, but these are the same style of mirrors that were only available on the 2500 version of the Silverado, in other words they are huge. However, after pulling most of Craig’s trailers he would recommend the mirrors for anyone wanting to put a larger trailer behind the truck. If pulling trailers is going to be one of the basic things done with the Silverado, we would also recommend the addition of the Max Trailering Package, at $980 it is an addition that will make hauling anything behind the truck smooth and easy. 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71 Crew Cab - Long Term Report: Part 1 of 4 - Four Wheeler Network
This is our 2014 Four Wheeler Pickup Truck of the Year award winner, and as always, we requested an example for further testing and evaluation during a full year of real-world use. com , but to summarize, the all-new Silverado edged out a win over the Tundra TRD and Ram 2500 after a week of brutal testing both on- and off-road in the SoCal mountains and deserts. The Chevy’s powerful new engine, interior comfort, and high build quality were strong enough to convince the judges for the win, even though our testing is heavily weighted towards off-road prowess. We ordered this truck in essentially the same level of trim as the one we tested back in October—a Z71 package, LTZ trim, and the new 5. 3L gasoline V-8. While we did consider ordering the bigger 6. 2L, our policy is to conduct long-term... Checking the LTZ Plus and other options brought the final price up to $53,210 from a base of $45,050. Skip the 20-inch chrome wheels, sunroof, and chrome assist steps, and you’ll be just fine for far less money. The 2014 engine is all new, besides sharing a few small parts with the previous 5. 3L, and features direct injection, continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves, and cylinder deactivation. Both in everyday driving and towing, the power comes on early and moves the truck effortlessly, requiring much less engine speed to develop enough power than the old. Source: www.fourwheeler.com

2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3L 4x4 Crew Cab Test ...
TESTED
You’d think truck makers would be throwing a veritable conniption, what with gas prices so high and the concept of vehicle downsizing seemingly taking hold. Yeah, right—big-time pickup makers have it the other way around, acting more like the folks lining up to slap the famously panicked passenger in the movie Airplane! out of it. Instead of clubs, a gun, or even a nun, players like Ram and Ford are coolly wielding technologies to maximize fuel economy and add carlike refinement.
Chevrolet, however, is going its own way on the concept, passing over turbocharging, a self-lowering aerodynamics-enhancing suspension, and a gajillion-speed transmission for its redesigned Silverado and focusing instead on honing the classic-pickup recipe. Testing the high-zoot, four-wheel-drive LTZ Z71 crew-cab model you see here, the question we raised after first driving the Silverado last month cropped up again: Is it enough to move the bar? That will be answered by a proper comparison test, but we can report that Chevy takes a decisive step forward.
Chevrolet Is Serious, and Don’t Call It Shirley
“Decisive step forward” certainly doesn’t apply to the styling, which is thematically similar to the old truck. Mostly, the updates apply to the stiffened body structure and overhauled interior, as well as a trio of all-new V-6 and V-8 engines. (This test focuses on what is expected to be the Silverado’s volume powertrain, the 5.3-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic, but a 4.3-liter V-6 and a 6.2-liter V-8 will be available.) Besides its fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation feature, which operates the V-8 on just four cylinders in low-load scenarios, and—on the LTZ trim—a nicely assembled interior with a stitched vinyl dash and door padding, chrome-accented buttons, and the MyLink touch-screen infotainment interface, the Silverado, leaf-sprung rear suspension and all, is boldly unremarkable on paper.
2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ
Yet in the metal—the carry-over man-truck styling notwithstanding—the little things pay off. The Silverado’s on-road behavior is almost carlike, but given that the crew cab stretches nearly 20 feet nose to stern, comparisons to a big crossover are probably more apt. The steering wheel, although offset slightly to the driver’s right, is well weighted, loading up predictably in relation to cornering forces. The firm brake pedal not only offers superb bite but also returned a commendably short 178-foot stop from 70 mph, four feet better than a 2013 Ford Taurus SEL AWD we tested recently. Sound-smothering triple-sealed doors (now inset into the cab body), a solid-feeling chassis, and a remarkably compliant ride also make it difficult to write off the Silverado as a half-baked evolution.
The 5.3-liter V-8’s full 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque are delivered close to redline, meaning it needs to be worked to hustle. Hammer down, the V-8 motivates the 5605-pound Silverado crew cab to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 15.3 seconds at 92 mph. We dig the noises the V-8 makes under hard acceleration and the lack of any noise at all when just half its pots are boiling with the cylinder-deactivation feature. The 13 mpg we saw in our testing was less rosy but not uncommon among full-size pickups, and the truck spent a lot of time with its engine idling for photos.
Calm Down and Get a Hold of Yourself!
Curiously, the six-speed automatic was clunky at low speeds—short of full-throttle applications, it tended to bobble the first-to-second shift. When slowing to a stop, the unit would also prematurely slam into first, resulting in a shudder. The truck’s high cowl and overly thick roof pillars drew flak, as well. The supports’ built-in grab handles make entry and exit handier for front and rear passengers, but they also do a good job of further obscuring the driver’s blind spots. Oddly, our test truck’s $845 Driver Alert package lacked a blind-spot monitoring system, which could cure some of the Silverado’s visibility woes, although it included lane-departure warning, an overly sensitive forward-collision alert, and handy front and rear park assists.
Our truck’s other optional niceties included the LTZ Plus package with power-adjustable pedals, Bose audio, and a heated leather steering wheel ($270); navigation ($795); power front seats with driver memory ($480); heated and cooled front seats ($650); a sunroof ($995); chrome running boards ($700); LED bed lighting ($60); cargo tie-down hooks ($60); and $1395 worth of 20-inch chrome wheels. (Standard LTZ goodies include a backup camera, projector-beam headlights, a color gauge-cluster display, an eight-inch MyLink touch screen, leather seats, and a trailering package.) The total came to $50,910, but more-expensive Silverados exist, thanks to the range-topping High Country trim level.
Still, customers don’t need to pony up 50 large to get the Silverado’s basic goodness, with base four-wheel-drive, V-8–powered crew cabs starting in the mid-$30,000 range. The Chevy’s improvements make it a stiff competitor for Ram’s updated-for-2013 1500, and the Chevy outclasses Ford’s aging F-150, which doesn’t feel as refined. But like we said, the three rigs will need to be lined up together to confirm the new pecking order.

Aluminum. Diesel. Coil springs. Air suspension. Turbochargers. These are all things that the 2015 Ford F-150 and 2015 Ram 1500 have independently, but the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado lacks. Truck buyers are a traditional bunch, though, so the question is, does any of that really matter? With the Silverado and its Sierra cousin the last truly traditional half-ton pickups on the market, we thought we'd find out if all that whiz-bang, attention-grabbing tech that its rivals have is worth the hype, so we rounded up a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ and hit the test track.More on Motortrend.com:
Our Silverado tester's Ecotec3 5.3-liter V-8 is Chevy's answer to the turbocharged power of Ford's EcoBoost and Ram's EcoDiesel engines. The Silverado's 5.3-liter V-8, which makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a two-speed, four-wheel-drive transfer case. Although more powerful than Ford's new 325-hp 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, the Silverado certainly doesn't feel it. While the 2015 F-150 SuperCab we recently tested with the little EcoBoost mill scooted from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds, our Silverado tester needed 6.9 seconds to hit the same speed. Our recent F-150 Platinum SuperCrew, which was equipped with the larger 365-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, was also quicker to 60 mph than the Chevy, hitting the mark in 6.4 seconds. The Ram 1500 bookends the Silverado's numbers: The 240-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 EcoDiesel model needs 8.8 seconds to hit 60 mph, and models equipped with the 395-hp 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi need 6.8 seconds. When it comes to dragstrip performance, the Silverado turned a 15.4-second time with an 89.8 mph trap speed. The Silverado's 60-0 stop took 127 feet. When it comes to handling performance, our 2015 Silverado 1500 tester lapped the figure eight in 28.0 seconds at 0.75g average and pulled 0.77g average on the skidpad. We ran the same straight-line instrumented tests with our Silverado hitched to a 7,000-pound trailer and saw the Chevy's 0-60 mph time drop to 19.5 seconds and its quarter mile time fall to 22.0 seconds at 62.3 mph. The F-150 2.7 EcoBoost with the same trailer needed 20.7 seconds to go through the quarter mile at 68.0 mph, and our long-term Ram 1500 EcoDiesel took 22.2 seconds to complete the quarter mile at 58.7 mph while loaded. The 2015 Silverado 1500 might be neck and neck with the other trucks in its class at the test track, but it certainly doesn't feel it out in the real world. The blame for that can likely be attributed to the Chevy's throttle and transmission tuning. The throttle has that heavy, dead feeling that Hyundais get when they're in Eco mode, and the transmission simply feels like it's from the last century. The six-speed wants nothing more than to be in sixth gear, even if that means it has to constantly up- and downshift over short periods of time on steep grades. The eight-speed auto that just became available in 2015 Silverados equipped with the larger 6.2-liter V-8 can't come to the 5.3 soon enough. The Chevrolet Silverado might be a disappointing drive, but its interior layout borders on brilliant. While I don't love its design, you can tell Chevy designed this truck's cabin for one thing and one thing only: work. It's got more power outlets than I have devices to plug in and a zillion USB jacks for charging your phone, your girlfriend's phone, her sister's phone, and your childhood best friend's iPod. Point is, there are a lot of them. To top it all off, the center console lid is big enough to fit a laptop on and use as a desk. Combine that with the OnStar-provided 4G LTE Wi-Fi and you've got a jobsite-ready rolling office. That said, your rolling office isn't coming cheap. Before options, our 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 LTZ starts in the mid-$40,000 range. Add four-wheel drive, 20-inch chrome wheels, active safety tech, and luxury features such as heated and cooled seats, and you're suddenly looking at a $54,550 sticker. Ultimately the choice between traditional truck technology like that found on the Silverado and more groundbreaking technologies like the F-150's aluminum skin and Ram's diesel engine is up to the buyer. As for our professional opinion on the matter, stay tuned. You May Also Like
