A turbocharged 2. 3-liter EcoBoost I-4 with 280 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque replaces the previous year's 2. 0-liter turbo-four and is newly available with all-wheel drive. In addition to the new 2. 3-liter turbo-four, a 3. 5-liter V-6 with 290 hp and 255 lb-ft is also available along with the twin-turbocharged 3. 5-liter EcoBoost V-6 rated at 365 hp and 350 lb-ft and are both carryovers from the pre-refresh Explorer. Towing capacity varies depending on the engine chosen, the both the base 3. 5-liter V-6 and the twin-turbo V-6 can tow up to 5,000 pounds while the 2. 3-liter turbo-four is good for up to 3,000 pounds. Off-road, the Terrain Management System on all-wheel-drive Explorers makes it capable in all but the most extreme conditions by tailoring the powertrain according to the type of surface the crossover is on.
