Sutherland named finalist for Md. Teacher of the Year - My Eastern Shore

State Superintendent of Schools Lillian M. Lowery announced seven finalists for the 2015-2016 honor on Wednesday, Sept. The other finalists are: Dr. Stephanie Marchbank, English, Allegany County. Stephanie Geddie, kindergarten instructional team leader, Howard County. The finalists were selected by a panel of judges representing principals, teachers, school boards, teacher unions, parents and higher education. Criteria used in the selection included teaching philosophy and results, community involvement, knowledge of general education issues and suggestions for professional and instructional improvement. “Maryland teachers are among the nation’s finest, and the work of these outstanding finalists represents the sparkling creativity and energy found in classrooms through the State,” Lowery said. “Maryland’s teachers offer our students world-class instruction, providing a passport to their future success. Sutherland is a biomedical sciences teacher at Kent Island High School, where she teaches chemistry, biology and career technology. But no matter what she was doing, it always seemed she was teaching, and she decided to go to graduate school and become a teacher.
