People still visit the spot where Mendota Heights police officer Scott Patrick was murdered one year ago during a traffic stop. Some leave flowers, candles, toys and other things at a curbside memorial to remember and pay tribute to Patrick, a well-known officer who took pride in his community-based policing during his 19 years on the city's police force. "People go over there and sit," said Joey McCollum, one of the owners of Doddway Auto Body and Service Center, which is across the street from the Dodd Road memorial just south of Smith Avenue in West St. Paul. Patrick's widow, Michelle, said it can be difficult for her to drive past the site of her husband's murder. The memorial does help ease her grief, she said, because it is a visible reminder of the community's ongoing support for Patrick, her high school sweetheart and husband of 26 years. That community support for the Patrick family and the city's police department will be on full display at public events held Thursday to mark the first anniversary of the murder. There will be a candlelight vigil at night and a daytime ceremony designating Dodd Road in Mendota Heights and West St. Paul as "Officer Scott Patrick Memorial Highway.
