The next artistic director of Minneapolis' Jungle Theater, announced today, can identify the play -- and the moment in it -- that told her she needed to direct. "I still remember where I was sitting," Sarah Rasmussen says of the Guthrie Theater's 1994 production of William Shakespeare's "As You Like It. ". "Elizabeth Marvel, who now plays that awesome Heather Dunbar (on TV's 'House of Cards'), was just... So Rasmussen, 36, did just that, writing and directing plays for residents of her hometown of Sisseton, S. D. (current population: 2,500). Soon, she shifted her attention to directing and, knowing she was unable to turn away anyone who auditioned,... "Someone in the literary department at CTC wrote back and said, 'It's very inspiring that you're directing these plays in smalltown South Dakota. You can do any of our plays, royalty-free,' " Rasmussen recalls. Rasmussen has interpreted many scripts since then: At St. Olaf College, where she earned degrees in theater and English, and University of California San Diego, where she earned a master of fine arts degree. at the University of Texas, where she's currently an associate professor and head of the MFA directing program.
