South Bend police officer, almost hit by gunshots, back on duty - South Bend Tribune

Teachman said the gunshots struck the ground near Donlon, creating sparks, and others flew past him through the air. Teachman said it remained unclear whether the person who fired the shots was trying to shoot Donlon or either of the people he was speaking with. At the time of the shooting, Donlon was standing less than five feet from each of the other people, Teachman said. "The shots were at the officer in terms of proximity, but I can't tell you any more about intent because the officer was in close proximity to the other individuals," Teachman said. On Sunday, police said Donlon saw the vehicle speeding away from the scene after the gunshots. He and another witness described the car as a red, late-model Ford Focus. Teachman said Donlon was in "good spirits" Monday and chose to report for duty even though he was offered some time off. Still, the incident was troubling for the entire department, Teachman said, adding that he could not recall another case of gunfire so close to an officer since he became chief more than two years ago.
