REGIONAL RAMBLINGS: Interesting things to know about Eva Ybarra, future ... - Monitor
At this weekend’s 17th annual South Texas Conjunto Association “Conjunto of the Year” awards ceremony, there will be four recipients of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement awards. Those four include: Eva Ybarra (San Antonio), Janie Esparza of Janie’s Record Shop (San Antonio), Juan Antonio Tapia (Brownsville) and the Moreno family of La Feria Record Shop (Lubbock). >> Eva Ybarra’s family gave her a two-row, button diatonic Hohner accordion when she was 4 years old. She first played with the Ybarra family band at age 6, accompanying her family in various places. >> The next band Ybarra joined was her brother’s — Pedro Ybarra y Los Chamacones — when she was a teenager. Due to Ruiz’s insistence, the releases went under the brand of “Eva Ybarra y su conjunto,” and a side note, “accompanied by Pedro Ybarra. >> Other recordings she did were for the labels Hacienda Records out of Corpus Christi and Rounder Records in the 1990s. Her most popular releases — “A Mi San Antonio” (1993) and “Romance Inolvidable” (1996) — came from that latter music company. Source: www.themonitor.com
