2016 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang Flat-Plane V-8 Makes 526 HP - Automobile

The flat-plane crankshaft, which is more compact than a traditional cross-plane crankshaft by nature, results in shorter engine profile, and reduces the amount of internal space and rotational mass compared to a normal cross-plane crankshaft. A flat-plane crankshaft is less balanced than a cross-plane crankshaft, creating additional vibration, but the tradeoff is a high-revving mill that spins up to redline quickly. Plus, the flat-plane crankshaft contributes to the exotic race-bred sound commonly found in much higher-end sports cars. Source: www.automobilemag.com
