Announced today as standard fitment on the 2016 Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustang, a racing-style... The Performance Shift Light Indicator in the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang is projected as head-up display onto the windshield, directly in the driver's line of sight. Interestingly, the idea came to Ford Performance electrical engineer Mike Makled when the collision warning and emergency braking system activated while driving a Ford Taurus SHO. “I thought, ‘Wait a minute, why don’t we use that technology for our shift light on the GT350. ’” said Makled in a statement. ” Ford’s shift-light indicator for the 2016 Shelby GT350 can switch between three settings. Ford opened the doors to what it calls its “innovation center” in Silicon Valley in January of this year, and is hard at work on developing the next-generation of automotive technology. To show what technologies we might see in future cars, Ford invited us to take a look behind the curtain at some of the coolest tech and concepts they had stewing in its high-tech pot. In the case of the next-gen Ford F-250 and F-350 trucks, that means “up to” seven cameras per truck. Beyond the next-gen HD trucks, Ford plans to introduce standard backup cameras on all its models in 2018, and standard front-facing cameras in 2020. Ford says the biggest challenge facing the future of cameras is dealing with weather and dirt. For now, Ford's solution is a cool robotic pop-up washer to deal with grime, available on the F-150. Ford has made significant investments in the pursuit of alternative materials, with heavy emphasis on recycled and reclaimed goods. It all started with soybeans, with Ford’s use of soybean-based seat foam in the 2008 Ford Mustang. The flat-plane crankshaft, which is more compact than a traditional cross-plane crankshaft by nature, results in shorter engine profile, and reduces the amount of internal space and rotational mass compared to a normal cross-plane crankshaft. A flat-plane crankshaft is less balanced than a cross-plane crankshaft, creating additional vibration, but the tradeoff is a high-revving mill that spins up to redline quickly.
