A 51-year-old Newburg man was killed Thursday evening after he was struck by two cars while walking near U. S. 301 and Route 5. According to Maryland State Police, at about 10:30 p. m. Johnny J. Phelps was walking in the road at northbound Route... Phelps was thrown across two lanes on U. S. 301 and was struck a second time by a 1998 Honda Accord, driven by Mark L. Nebo, 35, of La Plata, police said. Troopers from the MSP La Plata barrack responded to conduct an investigation. Justin Zimmerman with the Maryland State Police Crash Team at the La Plata Barrack said alcohol was not a factor for the drivers. It appears that Phelps was in the roadway illegally, and the fact that he was wearing dark clothing may have been a factor, Zimmerman said. He said Phelps was wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans.
