  There are a number of seven-passenger SUVs on the market, so what's so special about the 2010 Subaru Tribeca? For starters, every Tribeca is equipped with an advanced and capable all-wheel-drive system, a comforting thought for those whose daily commute sometimes includes deep snow and heavy rain. The Tribeca's unique boxer engine design lowers the vehicle's center of gravity and improves vehicle stability, and the Tribeca rates well in the government's front- and side-impact crash tests. Finally, the Tribeca's roomy interior coddles its passengers and stimulates its driver with loads of features, although the same enthusiasm is harder to generate when it comes to the Tribeca's exterior styling.

  You'll Like This Car If...

  If you're a Subaru devotee whose family is too large for an Outback or Forester, the Tribeca is the logical choice. First-time Subaru buyers will find the Tribeca's good fuel economy, strong resale value and proven reliability very inviting.

  You May Not Like This Car If...

  If you need room for seven adults, the Tribeca's child-sized third-row seat falls short. Those who don't need all-wheel drive can save money by shopping one of the Tribeca's less-expensive front-wheel-drive competitors.

  What's New for 2010

  For 2010, the five-passenger model is dropped from the lineup, while heated seats and a new rear air conditioning unit are made standard on all models. Limited and Touring trims receive a new 385-watt harman/kardon 10-speaker audio system, with Touring trims additionally receiving HID headlamps, a power moonroof, a rear backup camera and seven-spoke alloy wheels.

  Driving the Tribeca

  Driving Impressions A few minutes behind the wheel and it's evident the Tribeca is not your run-of-the-mill SUV. The handling is responsive and the steering firm and linear. Driving into...

  sharp curves yields some reasonable and expected body lean, but nothing that's surprising or uncomfortable. The all-wheel-drive system splits power in a 45/55 proportion that favors the rear wheels. In the event of tire slippage, power is immediately transferred to the wheels with better traction, helping the driver to maintain control. The new 3.6-liter engine delivers good performance, while improved shift points programmed into the automatic transmission lessen the number of gear changes required when climbing hills or moving through varying traffic.

  Favorite Features

  Rear Vision CameraThis optional feature allows the driver to see objects down low and directly behind the vehicle. It's available only on the Limited trim.

  Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)This safety feature works in conjunction with the all-wheel drive to help the driver maintain control. VDC senses the direction the driver intends to go and uses selective braking and engine power reduction to help maintain control.

  2010 Subaru Tribeca Details

  Interior

  Excellent fit and finish, appealing materials and an uncommon dash design are the hallmarks of the 2010 Subaru Tribeca interior. The wave-shaped dashboard visually delights, but its severe curve places some radio and heating controls at odd angles from the driver. Digital readouts for the fuel, temperature and information screens look attractive, but can fade when viewed through polarized sunglasses. Convenient tilt-and-slide second-row seat controls allow for easy access to the third row. We applaud the ample distribution of cup holders and wide front seating, which also have adjustable lumbar support for both the driver and passenger. Useful features include in auxiliary audio input jack and optional GPS navigation and rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

  Exterior

  

  The original Tribeca's face was unique, if not beautiful. A quick refresh brought about a more palatable, if somewhat generic, front end. The 2010 Subaru Tribeca's grille features horizontal slats below the familiar Subaru star cluster badge, flanked by large headlamps and front fenders that impart a strong road presence. Large side-view mirrors and rear windows, along with narrow D-pillars help with visibility. Around back, the Tribeca touts large, easily visible taillights and a sporty rear valance. A taut rear suspension carries over for 2010, helping to improve handling while yielding an impressive 8.4-inches of ground clearance.

  While auto reviewers praised the 2010 Subaru Tribeca's powerful engine, responsive ride and well-equipped cabin, some wondered if it offers enough to distinguish itself from the competition. It’s not a bad SUV, but many other options in this competitive class are better.

  Test drivers said that the 2010 Subaru Tribeca’s strengths are its standard seating for seven and all-wheel drive. The Tribeca also gets good safety scores, and reviewers said it’s fairly pleasant to drive on-road. Other than that, it’s a merely average and easily forgettable choice in a competitive segment full of more well-rounded vehicles. The Tribeca’s reliability score is low for the class, its acceleration is mediocre and a few writers wanted more interior space. In general, you’ll likely be better off with another crossover.

  The 2010 Subaru Tribeca comes with a 3.6-liter horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. Its fuel economy is below-average for a three-row crossover but it does come standard with all-wheel drive. The base Premium trim include features like an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt-adjustable steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, three-zone climate control and leather-trimmed shift knob. Higher trim levels add features like a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Bluetooth phone connectivity and leather upholstery.

  Other Cars to Consider

  The 2010 Toyota Highlander is a better option than the Subaru Tribeca in most ways. Its electronics are easy to use and it has a much better reliability rating. Even when equipped with all-wheel drive and an available six-cylinder engine, the Highlander returns better fuel economy than the Tribeca, and you can get even better gas mileage from the Highlander by buying a four-cylinder or hybrid model.

  You should also consider the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse, which offers comparable levels of safety and better reliability. The Traverse is one of the best three-row crossovers in its class, with one of the most spacious third rows and a comfortable ride. Its fuel economy is better than the Tribeca’s as well, and reviewers liked its interior much better, saying it’s quiet and well-equipped.

  What Is It?

  The Japanese automaker’s only full-size crossover with seating for seven. The Subaru Tribeca was introduced for 2006 with some rather unsightly, er, controversial, styling. Rehashed in 2008, the aesthetics were much improved, and the previously underpowered flat-six engine grew from 3.0 liters to 3.6, now producing 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. Still with a hefty thirst for fuel, the Tribeca now at least has enough motivation to pass safely on two-lane roads. Major updates for 2010 include standard third-row seating, heated front seats, and an auxiliary A/C unit for the second and third rows. A new Touring trim now sits as the top-dog model over the Limited.

  How Does It Drive?

  With the 3.6-liter, the Tribeca does a decent job of getting out of its own way. We experienced a good deal of body roll and understeer when tackling highway entrance ramps and conducting lane-change maneuvers. The suspension is very soft—making a lot of shuddering noises over our rough Michigan roads—and is slow to react, which makes the Tribeca drive much larger than it actually is. The softness does, however, provide adequate comfort for those aboard.

  How Does It Stack Up?

  If you desire a seven-passenger crossover equipped with all-wheel drive, the Tribeca will fill the bill, but be aware that the third row is only suitable for small children. And unlike the company’s smaller offerings, this Subie has no sporting intentions. The driving position is uncomfortable due to odd pedal placement and a nontelescoping steering wheel. Forward visibility is hindered by giant A-pillars and super-tall side-view mirrors, but vision out the back and sides is excellent. The Mazda CX-9 and the Honda Pilot are available with all-wheel drive and offer much more dynamic and efficient packages for about the same money.

  What’s the Cost?

  Our top-trim Touring model rang in at $38,690, which included $2200 for the optional navigation system. As the most elaborate Tribeca, the Touring comes equipped with most of what is optional on lower trims like premium audio, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, a sunroof, and more. It’s also differentiated from other Tribecas with a monochromatic exterior appearance. The base Tribeca is confusingly called Premium and can be had from $31,190; the mid-level Limited model starts at $33,190. All-wheel-drive versions of the CX-9 and Pilot start at base prices below that of the cheapest Tribeca.
