Subaru Is Planning a BRZ STI, But Probably Not More Power - The Cheat Sheet

When the Subaru BRZ was announced in 2011, everybody assumed that there would eventually be a turbocharged, higher-performance version as well. Sports cars almost always end up with a more powerful version after the original goes on sale, so while 200 horsepower was certainly enough for the BRZ, fans and press eagerly looked forward to getting their hands on the inevitable BRZ STI. Sadly, four years later, not only is there still no BRZ STI , but Toyota has clearly said that it has no plans of turbocharging the BRZ’s Scion twin, the FR-S. Subaru has confirmed to Automotive News that an STI version of the BRZ is coming, and it’s coming to the United States. Subaru showed a preview of what’s coming with the STI Performance Concept at this year’s New York Auto Show. Loosely based on the BRZ, the STI Performance Concept added a wild carbon-fiber aerodynamics package and a rear wing to an STI-tuned chassis, body, exhaust, and air intake system. “The United States is the highest priority for STI,” said STI President Yoshio Hirakawa. Subaru’s STI is not simply an in-house tuning division. It has three separate arms: one that builds complete cars like the WRX STI, one that offers aftermarket performance parts from the factory, and one that handles Subaru’s involvement in motorsports. OK, let’s make it 600 hp. No, 600 hp plus. Behold the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the McLaren 650S Spider. These two rear-drive, V-8-powered ultra buggies make power like a Third World dictator with a finger in the toaster, some 650 horses for the ’Vette and 641 hp for the McLaren. With the standard manual transmission, the ’Vette does 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3. 2 seconds. The McLaren 650S Spider needs just 2. 9 seconds flat. The Chevrolet Corvette Z06’s pushrod V-8 is big (6. 2 liters), supercharged, and mounted up front. The McLaren’s DOHC 32-valve unit is small (3. 8 liters), turbocharged, and sits right behind the people part of the car. The Z06’s V-8 mates with a seven-speed manual transmission (an eight-speed automatic is also available). the 650S uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. the McLaren has a power-folding aluminum convertible top.
