Four Wheeler Pickup Truck of the Year winner through over 16,000 miles of cross-country road trips, work-truck towing and hauling, play-time off-roading, and more. The ’13 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman has proved to be a true Swiss Army knife in nearly every situation we’ve driven it. The Ram’s eight-speed transmission has become an absolute game-changer in the ½-ton truck segment. It’s difficult for us to even get behind the wheel of a five- or six-speed truck now. We expect the ¾-ton truck market to follow suit with a heavy-duty eight-speed, although it may take a few years. Available storage in the Ram 1500 has been one of our favorite features. There are compartments in the floor, in the doors, in the center console, and of course, the RamBox, which has been a big help in keeping the interior of our truck clean. Rather than toss dirty items into the cab to secure them, we put them in the locking RamBox compartments. Off-road scratches and dings seem more obvious on the painted surfaces. The heated cloth seats and steering wheel we had in our truck were a dream in the winter. Summer months could have been just as comfortable with vented seats. Source: www.fourwheeler.com

The 2013 Ram 1500 can be outfitted with four-corner air suspension and an eight-speed transmission, two features that no one else offers right now. So does all this new technology come together to enhance the Ram half-ton, or have all these new items caused growing pains. FOR THE OUTDOORS MAN In our case, we tested a Ram 1500 Outdoorsman. The Outdoorsman package is designed specifically for hunters, fishermen, campers and boaters, and includes features like upgraded shocks, a towing package, Ram boxes and an appearance package. Powering this truck, Ram offers the 5. 7-liter HEMI that makes 395 hp 410 lb-ft of torque, but our tester arrived with the more economical 3. 6-liter V6 that produces 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. Hooked up to the eight-speed gearbox, this truck gets a fuel economy rating of 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined. Our time with the Ram 1500 returned an average of 19 mpg, pinning it right to where it needs to be. On the highway, it occasionally could be coaxed to give up to 25 mpg, though it took a light foot.
