The Titan was introduced in 2003 and introduced the full-size Nissan F-Alpha platform, shared with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, which are both derived from the Titan with all three manufactured in Canton, Mississippi, United States. The design language of the future truck was previewed by the 2001 Alpha T concept shown at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show, which had previously developed through November 2000. Production began on September 21, 2003 and sales on December 1, 2003. The current Titan has been largely unchanged since its introduction witw[3][4][5]

  • Nissan Titan 5.6SE Crew Cab - Road Test - Car Reviews ...

In the cosmos of full-size pickups, size matters. That's one reason Nissan chose the name Titan-a mythical earth giant characterized by brute strength and primitive appetites. Today, our only remaining earth giants are Dick Butkus and the former governor of Minnesota.

Last January, we suggested Nissan name this truck the Whopping Colossus Carnivore. The marketing guys said the name didn't matter-they had obviously been drinking-as long as no one perceived this truck as anything other than "as full as full-sized gets." That shouldn't be a problem. The Titan is 2.5 inches longer than Chevy's Avalanche, 2.9 inches taller than a Silverado SS, and 11.5 inches more endowed of wheelbase than a Toyota Tundra. Plus, the Titan's got enough fake chrome on its nose to outfit a Roppongi sushi bar. Still, the Nissan bloodlines shine through. If you could get the Titan's high-school yearbook photo, you'd notice its resemblance to a little Frontier.

This truck comes in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive layouts, in XE, SE, and LE trim. There's a King Cab, whose bed is six feet, six inches long, and a crew cab (as tested here), with a bed one foot shorter.

Buried below every Titan's surprisingly short hood is a mighty wangdoodle of an all-alloy 32-valve V-8, built in Decherd, Tennessee, of all places. It produces 305 horses at 4900 rpm. That tops the Toyota Tundra's multivalve V-8 by 65 horsepower. Truck buyers have historically pooh-poohed twin-cammers for their peakiness. Nissan insists this one isn't, producing 90 percent of its torque below 2500 rpm. But it's still a gentleman at step-off. Throttle tip-in is far gentler than in two previous preproduction Titans we sampled; now it's refined, subtle, never hot-roddish. The power builds rapidly and smoothly, with a throaty V-8 whoop that will mesmerize Pro Stock fans. Around town, it feels a little like the Northstar V-8 in Caddy's SRX. Which isn't a bad thing to feel like. The real fun begins at 4000 rpm-yeah, a little high-and from there to the automatic-shifting redline (5800 rpm), the Titan is a Titan rocket. Hold your foot flat and, at each upshift, revs return smartly to 4000 rpm, ready again to make the most of that meaty third of the band. It means the Titan is a champ at passing slower machinery on back roads. Notice its 3.5-second 30-to-50-mph top-gear time-only 0.1 second behind the 345-horse hot-rod Silverado SS.

In fact, our 5030-pound Titan clobbered 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. That's 0.9 second quicker than either a Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab with a 345-horse Hemi or a GMC Sierra Denali with a 325-hp, 6.0-liter Vortec V-8-two of our favorite trucks. It's odd to find yourself at the helm of a full-size pickup with such squeeze-and-squirt prowess. Heck, the Titan rolls through the quarter-mile at the same velocity as a Mercury Marauder, and it's a 10th quicker.

We found the rack-and-pinion steering a little heavy at parking speeds, though it lightens acceptably by 25 mph. It's always somewhat leaden, though-perhaps the price paid for filtering out kickbacks so nicely. Tracking at freeway speeds is exemplary. At a 70-mph cruise, the Titan is as quiet as a Tundra Limited. The greatest audible irritant is wind tumbling around the huge F-250-like twin-boom mirrors.

Cockpit ergonomics are close to flawless. The window and door-lock switches, for instance, are on a lone, flat, up-facing panel perched at the base of the A-pillar, always within reach of a left finger. The steering wheel is fat and grippy. The three rotary climate controls are a paradigm of intuition, as are the radio's rotary volume and tuning knobs-a modern rarity. Even while wearing gloves, you can operate virtually all the secondary controls. The huge gauges feature bold white numerals on a black background, the wipers are Lexus quiet, and the A/C's max setting should be labeled "Resolute Bay." Overhead are five of those ubiquitous plastic swing-down sunglasses holders-the Titan clearly has a future with optometrists. Plus, there are seven grab handles, about what you'd expect in a restroom at Bill Knapp's.

As far as we could tell, there are two ergonomic quirks only: a liquid-crystal PRNDL readout that fades in sunlight, and a column shifter that won't let you shift manually. To do so, you instead must depress an overdrive kill button at the column's tip, then shift up or down by flicking your thumb banjo-style across a tiny toggle. You'll get used to it in a few days. And shifting in this manner does allow you to delve 700 revs deeper into the redline, though it doesn't yield quicker 0-to-60 sprints. But the system requires more focus than your average trucker will likely care to summon. If you order the optional captain's chairs, you'll get the more familiar gated console shifter that solves both problems. But it eats a lot of floor space and spoils the middle perch on that otherwise fantastically useful front bench.

    Highs, Lows, and Verdict Highs:

Strong and velvety V-8, immense cockpit, smart ride-and-handling trade-off.

    Lows:

Heavy steering, rattly tailgate, some chintzy interior surfaces.

    Verdict:

The best first effort in all of full-size truckdom.

  • Nissan Titan Review - Research New & Used Nissan Titan ...

The Nissan Titan, introduced for 2004, was the first Japanese pickup to truly possess the attributes that buyers typically expect from a full-size truck. Manufactured at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi, plant, it boasts dimensions and capabilities that are very similar to those of domestic full-size pickups. Though it hasn't sold as well as its rivals and is now growing quite long in the tooth, a new or used Nissan Titan can still meet the basic needs of many truck shoppers.

Current Nissan TitanThe Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck. In terms of size, it's very similar to the trucks offered by domestic automakers, which means it provides competitive amounts of cargo and interior room. There's a fully boxed frame underneath for maximum rigidity and strength, as well as a traditional solid rear axle with leaf-spring support.

Nissan currently offers the Titan in extended-cab (King Cab) and crew-cab styles, with two bed lengths each. Buyers may also choose between standard- and long-wheelbase versions, with the latter adding 20 inches in length. The King Cab is offered with either a 6.5- or 8-foot bed, while those on the crew cab are each 1 foot shorter. The King Cab's rear-hinged doors open extra wide to aid cargo loading or a passenger's entry to the rear seats. The crew cab has four traditional doors and a larger rear seating area with more available rear legroom than the extended cab.

Each Nissan Titan body style is available in four trim levels. Similar to other Nissan products, there's the entry-level S, the midgrade SV, off-road-focused PRO-4X and the luxury-oriented SL. The S has a front bench seat, while captain's chairs with a flow-through console are standard on the other trims. Standard safety features now include stability control, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags. Notable options, depending on trim, include upgraded audio systems, a navigation system, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system and utility-enhancing cargo bed features. For those who anticipate pulling trailers, the SV Value Truck or SL Max Utility tow packages are also available.

The PRO-4X trim level adds equipment for serious off-roaders that include Rancho shocks, a lower final-drive ratio, skid plates, an electronic locking differential and 18-inch off-road wheels with aggressive off-road tires. Unique exterior and interior styling cues to differentiate the PRO-4X from the other Titan models are also included.

For power, Nissan offers only one combination: a 5.6-liter V8 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission. The V8 is rated at 317 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. The transmission features a tow/haul mode for when the truck is used for pulling or carrying heavy loads. For every body style and trim combination, two- or four-wheel drive is available.

In Nissan Titan reviews, our editors have found it to be powerful and capable both on- and off-road. Downsides include a lack of additional powertrain choices and the absence of a heavy-duty model. The Titan has also been outclassed by newer competitors in terms of comfort and overall design. Still, we think Nissan's Titan is worth a look.

Used Nissan Titan ModelsThe current, first-generation Titan debuted for 2004, and these earlier trucks could be a good choice for a shopper searching for a used late-model pickup. The first couple of production years, in particular, outclassed domestic pickups in many ways. The most notable changes for the Nissan Titan came for the 2008 model year and included the addition of a long-wheelbase model, exterior and interior styling refreshes and new features. Models built for 2007 and earlier were available in one wheelbase length only, lacked the two different bed lengths for each body style and also had a reduced maximum payload.

It should be noted that stability control, side airbags and side curtain airbags were not standard on all Titans until 2010. Used shoppers should investigate whether the truck in question is equipped with them. Also, the current trim levels were introduced for the 2011 model year; previously, the Titan's three main trims were XE, SE and LE, though feature content was broadly comparable.
