Toyota has confirmed to Bloomberg News that the 4th generation Prius will be shown for the first time to the press and public on September 8, ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt auto show later in September. The 2016 Toyota Prius is built on the company’s new global chassis that will underpin everything from the lowly Yaris to the svelte Avalon. It was expected to debut last year, but company officials reportedly sent the proposed design back to the styling department with orders to give the car a more sporting appearance. There are also rumors that the Toyota brass wanted a more significant improvement in fuel economy for this 4th generation car. The original Prius Liftback has spawned three other variations – the smaller Prius C, the larger Prius V and a plug-in hybrid version of the Liftback. The new Prius Plug-In Hybrid is not expected in showrooms for at least a year. More buyers seem to want a plug-in hybrid or pure electric car. Pathfinder began life as little brother to the Nissan Patrol. Nissan beefed it up and ran it as a practical alternative to the new street-smart Murano, the latter with its newly developed leading edge continuously variable transmission and sports coupe-style looks. Now Nissan has slotted in a petrol-electric hybrid to its Pathfinder range. It uses a 2. 5-litre supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine coupled with a 15kW electric motor, resulting, Nissan claims, in V6 performance with fuel consumption of a four-cylinder SUV. The Pathfinder ST is powered by a 2. 5-litre supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 15kW electric motor, giving maximum total outputs of 188kW and 330Nm, with a torque curve almost identical to that of the V6 petrol powered model. The highly efficient petrol/electric powertrain, which claims a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 8. 4L/100km with the 2WD variant, makes use of an intelligent dual-clutch system.
