For Warren Hoey, Mitsubishi’s high-tech ’90s sports coupe known as the 3000GT VR4 is the perfect weapon for hunting Porsches and anything else that might try to outrun him. “I’ve been drag racing, drifting,winter autocrossing and even drove a chase car during a rally in Ireland,” Warren says. Both of my brothers-in-law have some fast machines, one with an 850-whp MKIV Supra and the other with a 650-whp FD RX-7. But for me, the VR4 is special. It’s extremely rare and I love driving a car knowing there is basically no chance another ’99 will pull up beside me. Mine is car 271 out of 287 produced. Once Warren and his bro-in-law finished installing all the powertrain upgrades, from the 15g twins to the ARC intercooler and Snow Performance meth injection kit to the SPEC Stage 3 carbon clutch and Fidanza aluminum flywheel, they took it to... The 3000GT VR-4 is a sign of both what's right and what's terminally wrong with the automotive industry. Which is remarkable, because they haven't made one since, oh - 2000. US imports ceased in 1999, meaning the freshest of 3000GT's are more than a decade old at this point, so the relevance of the VR-4 is questionable. The 3000GT (marketed in Japan and other countries as the GTO, which you know wouldn't have gone over well here) was Mitsubishi's flagship halo car, a rolling testbed to show just what the company could do. It replaced the ancient (but awesome)... Based on a shortened Diamante platform, the 3000GT used a transverse-mounted 3. 0L 24v V6 to drive the front wheels in base form. 222bhp wasn't too shabby (exactly on par with the also new-for-1990 Nissan 300ZX) but the front-wheel-drive 3000GT wasn't the one anyone (besides poseurs) cared about. 0L engine gained a pair of turbochargers and intercoolers, a transfer case and two more driven wheels at the back, four-wheel-steering, active aerodynamics, ECS (Electronically Controlled Suspension), and even a variable-noise exhaust system which... The monster twin-turbo engine sent 300bhp and 306lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. It was a small 2-door coupe with four wheel drive and a twin-turbo 300bhp engine. Mitsubishi 3000GT Hybrid Could Replace Lancer Evolution - Gas 2.0

The Mitsubishi 3000GT could return to dealers as a hybrid sports car, according to a new report, replacing the Lancer Evolution as Mitsu’s sole sports car. Alright, “performance icon” might be a bit generous, but the Mitsubishi 3000GT (known as the Mitsubishi GTO in Japan) was a something of a contender in the early to mid 90s. The VR-4 variant got a twin-turbo V6 which delivered between 276 and 320... Unfortunately, the cramped engine bay made it an unlikely candidate for aftermarket performance, and high cost (starting around $30,0000 and topping out at over $50,000) made the 3000GT a niche market vehicle at best. And so we find ourselves, 15 years later, reading a report in one hand about the cancellation of the Evo, and in the other hand, the resurrection of the 3000GT. Full freakin’ circle, baby. The idea of bringing back a Mitsubishi performance car as a 2+2 coupe, instead of a sedan, was raised by Mitsu’s U. K. chief Lance Bradley. Though Bradley didn’t mention the 3000GT by name, the only other coupe from Mitsubishi’s past was the Eclipse, which ditched all pretense of performance to cater to the O. C. crowd. Source: gas2.org
