FOR this week's blog, I will be featuring this 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in an absolutely stunning shade of AMG Le Mans Red Metallic paint. The SLS AMG was first released back in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show as the spiritual successor to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. The SLS brings back the famous gullwing doors, which are hinged on the roof and swing upwards. as if this car wouldn't attract enough attention as it is. Sitting underneath the almost two-metre long bonnet is a huge 6. 2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, which is capable of producing up to 420 kW @ 6,800 rpm and 649 Nm of torque @ 4,750... When this car was first launched, Mercedes-Benz themselves claimed that the 6. 2-litre V8 in the SLS was the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in the world. When the launch control button is pressed, the SLS is able to take off from 0-100 kilometres per hour in just 3. 8 seconds, and it will keep accelerating until it reaches its top speed of 317 kilometres per hour. Some other features that this model is equipped with includes AMG seven-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in performance tires, 4-wheel ABS as well as traction and stability control, self-levelling. We note this here because, despite the car’s retro-gullwing looks, the SLS is utterly bleeding edge—both in terms of its technical attributes and what it represents for Mercedes’ in-house tuner. It is not simply a Mercedes with bigger wheels and a breathed-upon V-8 or V-12. It is, down to its churning carbon-fiber core, AMG’s first dedicated automobile and the very antithesis of the overly complex and overweight half-million-dollar... “The SLS is a serious super sports car,” says AMG chief of development Tobias Moers before taking a shot at the SLR, a carbon-fiber-bodied car that still managed to weigh in at 3858 pounds. “Our SLS weighs only 3572 pounds,” he says, nearly 300 pounds lighter than the McMerc. The most distinctive aspect of the SLS’s appearance is, of course, its roof-hinged gullwing doors, an homage to the iconic 300SL Gullwing. But AMG personnel took pains to point out that the doors are the only thing the SLS has in common with the 300SL. “We do not build a retro car at all.
