The German automaker's largest SUV, the GL shares its platform and assembly line with the two-row M-Class SUV, offering similar powertrain choices and features. Of all the full-size luxury SUVs, the GL ute has some of the best road manners. The independent suspension has air shocks that give it a pillowy ride, and some versions offer an adaptive suspension that counteracts body lean quite well. We'd normally prefer a more basic solution, but this way, a wider spread between comfort and sporty driving modes tailors the GL to more drivers. For off-roaders there's a package that adds a low range, a locking center differential, tuned traction and stability control, and adjustable ride height that lifts the GL from 8. 5 inches of ground clearance to a full foot. Practical Motoring Says: The G-Class manages to be rare, practical, safe, tough and fun. It's expensive, but if you can afford the ask it should be high on your shortlist for a very capable 4WD vehicle which can deliver a enjoyable driving and ownership experience matched by no other vehicle on the market. They’re powerful, safe, capable, useable and while they all look a little different and each has its own specifications, most of them are broadly similar, like eating out at any one of a number of high-street restaurants. The G-Class is different, and properly different as opposed to just marketing-different. Whether you love or hate the styling doesn’t matter because you absolutely won’t mistake it for anything else on the planet, so let’s get one thing out of the way, this car is unique and for many car lovers, that’s all they need to know. Originally designed in 1979 by Steyr-Daimler-Puch – of Haflinger and Pinzgauer fame – the G-Class is also known as the G-Wagen (G-Wagon), or Geländewagen, which literally translates to cross-country wagon. Carmakers like to harp on about heritage even when the doorhandles are carried over to a new model, but the G-Wagen doesn’t need to make a song and dance about its history – its obvious. Anyhow, if you're in the market for suburban family shuttle and you're starting to do some research, check this out. Mercedes' refreshed GLS-Class will be coming down the 'pike pretty soon. Expected to get the typical once over on its front and back ends, the GLS is likely to receive the latest three-pointed star engines that will bump up power and fuel efficiency. World premiere: the new Mercedes GLS (former GL X166) almost undisguised. Hopefully the refresh will address what I, as a very satisfied owner of a 2013 GL350 Bluetec, flag as really the only major failing in the vehicle - the brakes are a bit sub-par. The GL's brakes fade, the rotors warp, the peddle is sometimes mushy, they are completely undersized for the vehicle. Yes, that might be because I choose the 'entry-level' GL - but still the BRAKES SUCK. Not like life-threatening or anything - but the brakes on my S550 are fantastic. the GL brakes are a cut below - they are Toyota or GM quality. Source: www.autospies.com
