2009 Mercedes-Benz CLK-class Coupe - Spied - Car and Driver

Mercedes-Benz's current CLK coupes and convertibles are fine cars, but apart from the AMG-badged variants, aggressive or intimidating they are not. Most obvious at first glance is that the '09 CLK has new, angular headlamps. Also clearly evident is a significant increase in width and upswept body-side sculpting, both of which contribute to a road stance that will gain respect in ways that no CLK coupe , save the Black Series, can garner today. Like its big brother, the six-figure CL-class coupe, the new CLK will feature a rear end that slopes elegantly downward. In spite of being nice and shiny, look closely, and you'll see that it's merely part of the disguise (whew. We suppose we should wait to issue criticism until we see the whole car naked, but one thing is for sure: BMW designers Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk will be wearing grins the size of an M6 once they see their much-maligned tush design make... Various wheel-and-tire packages on these prototypes, as well as different tailpipe configurations, indicate that we're looking at different models, including, perhaps, the inevitable CLK63 AMG version (hint: look for the perforated brake discs). Other models we're sure to get in the States will be the 268-hp, 3. 5-liter V-6-powered CLK350 and the CLK550 with a 382-hp, 5. 5-liter V-8 and their convertible counterparts. Using a derivative of the A3's turbo engine, it has received a seeing to that manages a 33-percent increase in horsepower (72 additional) over the standard 220 horsepower inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine. Better suited for four passengers than the five it is equipped for, it is part of the same platform family (MQB) that is the basis for more than 50 VW Group models including the Audi TT , VW Jetta and Golf. 0-liter turbocharged engine receives a beefing up from top to bottom, which includes new pistons, stronger connecting rods, better crankcase bearings, and a new cylinder head made from lightweight aluminum silicon alloy. For those without the need of the S3's extra power, there is always the standard A3 with 1. 8-liter engine and front wheel drive, the 2. 0-liter quattro model with its 220-horsepower I-4 turbo engine and all-wheel-drive, or the front driving 2.... We could tell from earlier spy shots that the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe was adopting sportier styling compared to the elegant sedan version, but we’re just now learning how significant those changes are. From what we can see, the baby-S-Class looks should make the C-Class coupe a serious head-turner. Matching this sportier shape are some concrete mechanical changes that will further differentiate the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe from its luxury- and comfort-oriented sedan sibling. The same range of turbocharged engines seen in the C-Class sedan should be available on the 2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. We have heard that Mercedes may be phasing out the C400 from the C-Class lineup though, so it’s possible the sport-focused C-Class Coupe may stick to only the performance-oriented C450 AMG.
