The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan launched the prestige vanguard against the mainstream mid-sized ranks and now the wagon is wheeled into the attack. Starting at $63,400 for the C200 petrol model and capping out - for now - at $72,900 for the C250 Bluetec diesel, the wagons are a volume-boosting equation at $2500 more than the comparable sedans. With similar load space, better handling and lither looks, the C-Class wagons mount an ample argument against SUVs. That won't stop people buying ML wagons but it should give them cause to reconsider. Driving position and feel of the leather-wrapped steering wheel are spot-on and the standard features list embarrasses mid-sized rivals, mainstream or premium. Default hardware includes LED headlamps, front and rear parking sensors, seven-inch infotainment screen, reversing camera, DAB radio, 18-inch alloy wheels and leather-like upholstery. This changes the steering, accelerator and transmission response - and with them the fuel economy of the vehicle - from light to heavy. The Mercedes C-Class is one of the best cars of its type, with swish looks, a strong image, a classy interior and good practicality. In a class where image counts for a whole lot, the C-Class makes a very strong case for itself. With curvaceous lines and swoopy details, it looks very much like a scaled-down version of the S-Class limousine, which instantly gives an impression of class and exclusivity. All versions come with alloy wheels, but mid-range Sport models get LED headlamps and more chrome exterior trim than entry-level SE models for a slightly sharper look. All versions have dense-feeling materials, spiced up by plenty of metallic and piano black inserts, and the simple, clutter-free design looks cool and makes things appear even more sophisticated. That layout does mean that most functions have to be controlled via the infotainment system, but while rivals from Audi and BMW have more intuitive systems, the Merc’s is easy enough to get to grips with once you’re used to it. The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class range has been expanded with the addition of a station wagon, or Estate as Mercedes likes to call it. Larger than the outgoing model it has rear-end styling that sits midway between that of the sleek CLS-Class... This weight reduction is despite the increase in size of the new C-Class Estate. It's 80mm longer in wheelbase (2840mm) than the superseded model. 96mm longer (4702mm) and 40mm wider (1810mm). The added space is chiefly for the benefit of those in the rear compartment, as well as to increase luggage space. The rear seats now have a 40/20/40 split instead of the 60/40 split in the predecessor to permit more permutations of passenger and luggage room. Power unlocking of the rear seat backrests at the push of a button provides a flat, load compartment. Almost like a smartphone, the touchpad in the Estate can be operated using finger gestures and there's also voice recognition. Like the sedan on which it's based the C-Class Estate has many driver assistance systems to give high levels of safety.
