After a mild refresh in 2013, the third-generation Miata, which comes in three trim levels — Club, Sport and Grand Touring — is the last fun little roadster of this generation. Mazda announced on April 20 that it had begun production of the fourth-generation, 2016 MX5 Miata — co-developed with Alfa Romeo — and on May 4 that it was accepting pre-orders. With over 950,000 sold worldwide, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the MX-5 is the “Best-Selling Two-Seat Roadster” on the planet. So if this was to be our last time behind the wheel of the current generation MX-5 Miata, we couldn’t have asked for a better goodbye than the Zeal Red automatic with the paddle shifters, or the Meteor Gary 6-speed stick Grand Touring model with... Well then, step right up. you're the ideal candidate for the Mazda MX-5, also called the Miata. At long last (10 model-years, to be exact), Mazda is introducing the fourth-generation of the world's all-time best-selling roadster, with a little help from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), it must be said. In Mazda's case its pockets aren't lined with as much gold as, say, Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen or other dominant automakers. To rationalize costs, Mazda partnered with FCA's Fiat branch on platform development, which will reportedly also lead to a future sports car to be branded the Fiat 124 Spider. For Mazda, the end result is here now, and an impressive result it is. Compared to the outgoing Miata, the 2016 model is considerably sleeker from grille to trunk lid. The design also signals a complete departure from the Miata's original inspiration, the Lotus Elan that came out of England in the early 1960s. The fenders now bulge aggressively out from the body, the grinning air intake has thankfully been toned... In shaping the new MX-5, Mazda's stylists cut the overall length down by more than three inches and reduced the distance between the front and rear wheels by close to an inch. It’s close to being a miracle that the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata exists. Surely Mazda’s accountants and its “brand strategists” will weigh in and, for this fourth-generation, dilute the MX-5 with demands for practicality. If the second- and third-generation cars were iterations on that original Miata twenty-five years ago, this new model is a whole different beast entirely. Somehow, Mazda has managed to make the new MX-5 smaller and yet also more capacious inside. So, the new Miata has 45mm shorter overhangs and is 5mm wider in both the front and rear track. The engine has shuffled back 22mm and dropped 13mm, while the wheelbase is 15mm shorter. The driver sits 20mm lower and 15mm closer to the center of the car, while the hood height is reduced 28mm: that may not sound much, but it adds up to greater visibility out of the windshield both laterally and horizontally. Similarly, by reducing the steering wheel radius by 2mm, and giving it 10mm more upwards tilt, Mazda gives the driver 12mm more leg clearance.
