Seeking the input of the nation's largest sports car market, Mazda conducted a nationwide poll asking car buyers their opinions on the Miata M Speedster concept car. Pop-up headlamps, delicate chrome finger-operated doorhandles and a manually folding canvas top gave the car a simple, yet sophisticated style. Sales commenced in May 1989 with a base price of just $13,800. One drive won over skeptics that Mazda was serious — and they fell in love. Buyers could choose a four-speed automatic transmission, but the wrist-quick five-speed manual was the one to have. Four-wheel disc brakes and a four-wheel independent suspension gave Miata moves the old Brits and Italians could barely touch. Growing up. It was 10 years before Mazda saw fit to update the popular roadster. The body grew slightly and became curvier, but was clearly a Miata. Engineers developed a new 140-horsepower 1. 8-liter four-cylinder engine that scamped the little car from 0-60 mph in 7. 9 seconds on the way to a 122 mph top speed. Getting a refresher in one of our favorite pure and honest cars. ASSOCIATE EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN: The 2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata is just a joy to drive. My friend’s dad had one that he raced, but that’s all I knew. When I finally got in one, I understood. I threw on the sunglasses and took a leisurely drive up to work. you can hear the sounds of the road and smell the smells of the city. I would consider driving the MX-5 “enjoying nature. Sure power is just barely serviceable at 167 hp, but its so damn fun to wring this thing out for everything it’s got. The clutch pedal catches low and early, and the throw on the shifter is short, perfect for lightning-quick gear changes. I’d say it’s softer than the Subaru BRZ , and way softer than the Mini Cooper Hardtop. Still, $32K is quite a bit of change for this. At any rate, I would never turn down the keys to a Miata with a six-speed manual. ASSOCIATE EDITOR GRAHAM KOZAK: Just as I don’t think anyone driving a Miata can be mad at the world, at least not for very long, I don’t think anyone who’s actually driven one can fail to get what the Miata is all about.
