Mazda engineers began with a solid strategy: Bring the MX-5 back to its roots as a pure, lightweight sports car yet still make it, euphemistically, “a product suited to today’s needs. Still, Mazda managed to shave 220 lbs from the 2016 (ND generation for the Anoraks) Miata while creating a thoroughly modern cockpit and driving experience. As you'd expect, aluminum construction plays a big part in the Miata’s weight-loss program. The hood, trunk lid and front fenders are aluminum, as are hidden bits like the steering knuckles, upper and lower front control arms, engine cradle and the rear hub supports. The resulting North American-spec MX-5 -- on sale in late summer 2015 -- will have a curb weight only about 200 lbs heavier than the original Miata, yet still meet far more stringent crash and pedestrian impact requirements. Designers managed to make the car lower and wider, eliminating the fender flares that gave NC Miatas an artificially beefed-up character line. Inside, the MX-5 has also grown up, but just enough -- an available screen-based infotainment system provides all the expected connectivity and nav options in a modern vehicle, but the simple controls and minimalist center stack still convey the... Today’s first question comes from a viewer who wants our opinion on our testing equipment. Q: Hey I love all your videos and reviews but I am interested in the equipment you use to get 0-60 times. I have seen yall use the aim solo timer as well as something that syncs up to a smart phone and I have even seen yall using the gtech pro fanatic a few times. Was in the market for getting one of these and would like your honest opinion on which one you think is more accurate. Im between the aim solo and gtech pro. I would also like to see a video review in the near future of the different types of equipment yall use if u could do that. Some people suggest that the Gtech is more accurate, but I slightly favor the AIM Solo DL. Here’s why:. It’s easy to use and has an excellent display It’s very rugged It keeps a charge for a long time There are a ton of settings for track, lap and performance times Still, there are a few issues”. It’s fairly accurate If you have a windshield with heating filaments (like the ones on Range Rovers) it won’t work properly It’s pricey It doesn’t have as many functions as some of the competition. In those bits of words exchanged, the magazine learned that Mazda has no desire to produce any high performance variants of the Miata MX-5, despite there being MazdaSpeed versions in the past. Additionally, Yamamoto said that a high-performance Miata would jack up the price too much, defeating the basic principle of the Miata’s simplified, cheap and low-cost concept.
